Over the weekend, Shane Van Gisbergen and I made the journey from Charlotte to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the NASCAR event. While the Cadillac Escalade remained in Mooresville, we opted to drive the Chevrolet Tahoe High Country that SVG utilizes on a daily basis.
As I pointed out last week, the Tahoe shares much of its mechanical foundation with the Escalade, featuring the same LS engine and drivetrain. Though its interior lacks the luxury and refined dashboard layout of the Cadillac, it performs admirably. In fact, we enjoyed a smooth trip, completing the journey in just over four hours.
Though slightly off-topic, I find it perplexing that GM Australia and New Zealand is choosing to introduce the GMC Yukon instead of the Tahoe. The Chevrolet brand is well-known and respected, while GMC is relatively obscure to most consumers. Moreover, in my opinion, the Tahoe has a more appealing design. The Yukon’s oversized grille only highlights what a significant SUV it will be in Australia.
The return trip home on Sunday night was equally effortless, taking just a bit longer due to some post-race traffic leaving the Speedway. We left immediately after the Cup race but still made it home by 11 p.m.
My only annoyance was the regulations permitting the use of red turn signals on the rear of vehicles. This is particularly noticeable in daylight, but the nighttime drive back to Charlotte revealed how ineffective it can be, due to the lack of contrast between tail lights and turn signals. Statistical evidence supports the notion that amber indicators are safer than red, yet the majority of vehicles still feature red signals.
During our time at the Speedway, I took the opportunity to examine the line of Chevy pickups designated for the drivers’ parade. Interestingly, they were not exclusively Silverados; there were a few of the latest Colorados as well. The person in charge generously allowed me to take a closer look at them. It’s unfortunate that this truck won’t be available in Australia, as it appears to be a solid option and significantly outpaces the Ranger in sales in the US, especially when you factor in its sibling, the GMC Canyon. However, it’s no surprise that the Toyota Tacoma dominates this segment, having recently undergone a major redesign. Moreover, unlike its competitors, it offers a longer load bed option, making it particularly appealing to motocross and trials enthusiasts.
Aside from the rear indicators, my experience of the highways in the southeast has been fantastic. I traveled from Mooresville to Washington DC, and the Interstate roads have been excellent. They are well maintained, with neatly mown verges, and a remarkable lack of litter, all while being bordered by breathtaking scenery adorned with trees showcasing vibrant autumn colors. Cruising along has been enjoyable, complemented by a consistently high standard of driving. This stands in stark contrast to motorway driving in the UK, based on my recent experience there.
I have come across numerous discussions regarding the deteriorating infrastructure in the United States, which may indeed be true in certain regions. However, my observations so far tell a different story. From my experiences not just on this trip but also earlier in the year while traveling in the northwest, it is clear that Australia lags behind in terms of road standards and conditions.
On my way to Washington DC, I took several hours to drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This stunning road, managed by the National Park Service, stretches 750 kilometers from the southwest of North Carolina heading northeast into Virginia, traversing the southern and central Appalachians. I drove a 130-kilometer segment of the Parkway, from Fancy Gap to Roanoke, and it was spectacular. The speed limit is set at 45 mph, but I kept my speed under 40 to take in all the sights. The views were breathtaking, with scenes of farms and deer roaming the landscape, providing a memorable experience over a few hours. The picnic areas are excellently maintained, and since I visited post-Labor Day, the traffic was light, as most people had returned to work. I cannot recommend this trip enough.

During my journey to the capital, I stopped by the Virginia Civil War Museum in New Market, VA. As a history enthusiast, I found it absolutely captivating, and thanks to a seniors discount, the admission was quite affordable! The well-maintained surroundings make it a delight to explore. It’s evident that everywhere I’ve traveled in the US this year, the grass mowers are truly enthusiastic! I appreciate that greatly.
Throughout the entire trip, the Escalade continues to impress as it effortlessly covers long distances. It’s not built for sporty driving, and attempting to handle it like one would be a mistake. Instead, one should let the V8 torque take charge and relax in the luxurious seats while enjoying the exceptional radio system. I’ve been tuning in to a variety of talk shows, discussing topics from NASCAR to politics, with a sprinkle of Country music in between!
This journey has only reinforced my feelings from earlier this year’s adventure. The average Australian visitor to the USA should definitely explore the broader country more than they currently do. While cities like Las Vegas, New York, and LA often top many people’s travel lists, they no longer appeal to me. Although I’ve visited all three and more over the years, they seem dull compared to the heart of the country. Each state continues to offer unique surprises and delights. I want to clarify that I’m not making any political statements, nor is that my intention. I simply see great opportunities to enjoy this country as a visitor. I’m eager to discover what Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York State have in store for me in the upcoming week.
