West Ham United midfielder adn Mexican National Team player Edson Álvarez disclosed that he turned down an offer to join Cruz Azul’s youth academy before ultimately joining Club América, one of their biggest rivals.
Álvarez sought Greater Challenge
Álvarez, a prominent figure to emerge from Club América’s youth system in recent years, explained his decision-making process in the ‘We Are Brave’ podcast hosted by Miguel Layún. He said he felt it was too easy to get into Cruz Azul and wanted a greater challenge.
“I’ve always thought things through a lot,” Álvarez stated. “The next day, I told my dad, ‘No, I don’t wont to go to Cruz Azul.’ He said, ‘How can you say that? You’re crazy. Grab your birth certificate, the photos, and let’s go.’ I told him no, because it was too easy to get in, I feel like it should cost me more, so I decided to go to América. I knew that if I failed, I could try again somewhere else later.”
Early Career Choice
Álvarez recounted that at 14, he had the opportunity to try out for both clubs.Initially, he chose Cruz Azul as of his father, a dedicated fan of the team. After the tryout, Cruz azul promptly offered him a spot and asked him to bring his registration documents the following day.
Though, “El Machín” decided he wanted a greater challenge at the beginning of his career. He became one of the youngest players to debut for Club América and one of the youngest to play in a World Cup match for the Mexican National Team at Russia 2018.
“I was 14 years old. I told my dad,’I want another challenge,I want to see how far I’m capable of going. I want to go to América,’” the Mexican player concluded.
