“Early Insights: Assessing the 2025 NHL Draft Class Amidst Junior Seasons and European Leagues”

As junior seasons and European leagues are in full swing, I am providing‍ my initial⁣ evaluation of the 2025 NHL Draft today.

Although‍ it’s still quite early and many things might change, various indicators suggest that ⁣the 2025 draft class may be slightly less robust ⁣compared to recent ⁣years. For instance, the projected top pick, ⁢James‌ Hagens—who is undoubtedly a remarkable pro prospect—would rank lower than Macklin Celebrini and Connor Bedard did at the same age. Furthermore, it seems that ⁤Hagens is not regarded as a consensus No. 1 prospect ‍among teams, which is often indicative of a weaker crop. Personally, I view it as a close‌ competition between him and Porter Martone, but I have heard support from scouts for a number of players being considered for the top spot overall.

On a brighter note, in this very early stage ⁣where plenty could change, the QMJHL appears to have its⁣ strongest class in quite some time. I see four players from the Q‍ in the first-round contention range. The Ontario league is also well represented, featuring six players in the top 12.

It remains too soon for me to categorize players into tiers or assign tool grades. That part will come in future ‍rankings, as I plan to provide more frequent updates this season.

Hagens was the standout⁤ player ⁣for⁣ the U.S. NTDP‍ last season. He possesses a remarkable mix of skating and skill, reminiscent ‌of recent program alumni like Logan Cooley and Jack Hughes. Hagens’ edge work is top-tier, making⁢ him‍ exceptionally elusive in open ice. He consistently executes challenging plays while in motion and excels as a playmaker. While not particularly large, ‍he competes fiercely and demonstrates ⁣the courage necessary to drive to the⁤ net and generate opportunities. He has the potential to become a top playmaking center in the NHL.

Martone had an impressive⁢ season, showcasing his skills in the OHL and‌ representing Team Canada U18 on multiple occasions. He is firmly in contention for the No. 1 pick, and I believe he is very⁣ much in competition with Hagens, who currently⁢ holds a slight edge due to his position‍ as a center. Martone’s exceptional skill level and ⁣creativity with the puck are top-notch. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, his ability to skate effectively positions him as a potential game-changer against older players. Additionally, he is a fiercely competitive player who excels in physical play and utilizes‍ his skill to drive toward the net.

Frondell excelled in Sweden’s junior leagues and also ⁤gained experience playing against men in the Allsvenskan last season.‌ Upon joining Sweden’s ‍U18 team, he quickly established himself as their top player. He possesses an impressive array of skills with the puck, consistently making challenging plays while in motion. ⁤Frondell skates well and ‍displays strong competitive spirit, making his play style adaptable ⁣for the NHL despite his average stature. He is not only a remarkable ‍playmaker but also poses a significant threat as a shooter from the faceoff circles.

Misa received exceptional status to compete in‌ the OHL at just 15 years of age and ⁣has excelled as a junior player since then. He is a top-tier skater with impressive skills and a strong offensive sense. ‌His capabilities suggest he could effectively run a professional power play ⁤and serve as⁣ a genuine offensive asset, thanks⁢ to his skillset and ability to create plays⁣ while moving. Although he is of average height,⁤ he effectively navigates to⁢ the net and generates offense ‍in ways that are likely to translate well to the NHL. While the “exceptional” label he earned‌ a few years ago may have somewhat exaggerated his potential, he still possesses many qualities sought after in NHL prospects.

Schaefer was chosen as the first overall pick in his OHL⁤ Draft and had a⁢ strong inaugural season in the league. ‍He possesses excellent skills and playmaking capabilities, although I believe his offensive finesse is not the most exciting aspect of his game. His greatest strength lies in his skating, as ‌he ‌is a ⁣powerful‌ and fluid skater capable⁤ of effectively ‍closing gaps and transitioning up the ice at a clear NHL level.⁢ He is a competitive defenseman with solid size who is projected to become a premier shutdown player⁤ at the highest level.

As a 16-year-old, Ryabkin stood out at the Russian junior ‌level, showcasing his potential as an impactful‍ player. Known for his likability, he fulfills many of the criteria scouts seek. His skating is impressive, and he possesses a wealth of skill along with the ability to⁣ improvise with the puck. Ryabkin ⁤has a keen sense‌ of the ice, consistently⁢ executing challenging passes. His‌ shot is effective,⁣ allowing him to score both from a distance and in close. He displays strong competitive spirit and utilizes ‍his ⁢body to win puck battles. Aside from an⁤ average‍ frame, his game does not exhibit any significant weaknesses.

Desnoyers made a significant impression as a rookie in the ‌QMJHL, achieving a point-per-game performance. Selected ⁤as the ‌top pick in his QMJHL Draft, he showcases remarkable skill and has the potential to become a ⁤genuine scorer at the professional level. ⁤While he ⁤may not⁢ be the most strategic player, his ability‍ to create plays and skillfully navigate past defenders stands out. I appreciate Desnoyers’ ⁣playing style, as I⁢ believe it will‍ transition effectively to the NHL. He has good size, skates well, plays fiercely, and contributes to both offensive and defensive efforts, which could position him as a top-six center in the NHL.

Aitcheson had an outstanding season, registering 39 points while logging significant ‌minutes for‍ Barrie.⁤ He was arguably⁤ Canada’s top defenseman ‌at the U18 World Championships. He’s a…

Spence ⁢had ⁢an impressive season during his time in the OHL, alongside his numerous appearances for Canada’s U18 team as a standout player. His competitive nature is exceptional. A determined worker, he wins many battles thanks to his length, speed, and relentless effort. He aggressively retrieves pucks and is an outstanding two-way forward. Additionally, his solid‌ offensive skills and playmaking ability make him‍ a versatile player⁢ that coaches will want on the ice frequently. While‌ scoring a large number of goals in the NHL may be a challenge for him, he possesses genuine one-on-one⁢ skills and the capability to create chances at a professional pace.

Ravensbergen performed admirably during his inaugural WHL season as the starting goaltender for a top team. He‌ fulfills ⁤many criteria of ⁤a premier NHL prospect. Standing at 6-foot-5, he showcases remarkable athleticism. His intelligence shines through as he anticipates plays well and shows aggressiveness⁢ in challenging shooters with his large frame. He has the capability to make numerous challenging saves, often doing so in a manner that ⁤demonstrates his potential as⁣ an NHL goaltender. His future in professional hockey looks very promising.

This season, O’Brien excelled as a point-per-game center in the OHL and played a vital role on a competitive⁣ Brantford team. He showcases impressive patience and vision, allowing him to retain pucks for an additional moment to make plays. Extremely skilled with the puck, he possesses the‍ finesse necessary to generate NHL scoring opportunities and routinely execute challenging plays. Additionally, O’Brien‌ is a determined center who⁤ drives to the net,⁤ wins puck battles, and ‍maintains a strong tempo in his ⁤game. His foot ‍speed is also sufficient for the NHL, indicating significant potential as a scoring forward.

Hensler had a strong start last season with the ‌U.S. program, though his performance tapered off as the year progressed. Nevertheless, his skillset remains highly appealing for professional prospects. Standing at 6-2 and being a mobile right-shot, he possesses robust offensive capabilities and playmaking talents. He is projected to effectively lead a professional ⁣powerplay and contribute offensively. While his defensive play is adequate, his length and skating ability enable him to make⁢ defensive stops; however, he does not present a significant challenge for opponents.

Steven Ellis / Daily Faceoff

Smith, a 6-foot-3 defenseman, demonstrated good skating ability while achieving 29 points‌ in his⁣ rookie WHL season‌ last year. He also played a crucial role for Canada’s Hlinka team this summer. Though his skating style may appear unconventional at times, he is⁣ a ⁢powerful skater capable of eluding checkers and advancing the puck up the‌ ice efficiently. While his offensive skills and playmaking abilities from the point are decent, ⁣he may ⁣not qualify as a top-tier puck-mover. However, he ⁤does possess skill and a ‍solid point shot. If he‌ continues to develop, he could emerge as a top-four NHL defenseman.

Photo:

Portland Winterhawks

At 6-foot-6, ⁤Mrtka possesses the appearance of an NHL defenseman, particularly given the rarity⁣ of defenders with such ‍height who ⁤skate and handle the puck ‍effectively. During his most impressive shifts, he significantly influences the game by making crucial stops and joining the offensive rush.⁤ While he does exhibit some offensive capabilities, I wouldn’t categorize him as a naturally gifted puck-moving defenseman. Although he can ‍make some critical mistakes, he demonstrates enough composure at the blue line⁣ to be trustworthy in⁣ the NHL. He may not ⁤deliver crushing hits, but Mrtka⁢ utilizes⁤ his ⁣substantial frame and consistently puts in a strong effort ⁢each game.

Last season, Carbonneau stood out as an explosive player for Blainville. His natural puck skills and game vision allow ‍him to execute many high-caliber plays with the puck. Moreover, as an NHL-caliber skater who can outmaneuver defenders one-on-one at full speed, he demonstrates that his game can effectively transition‌ to higher levels.⁤ With a respectable size, he is a ‌natural scorer.

In ⁤42 WHL ⁣games with Calgary, Hamilton scored 31 points, playing a pivotal role in ‍the⁢ team’s offense as a 16-year-old. Although he ⁤stands at only 6 feet tall as a defenseman, he boasts ‌excellent skating skills characterized by a smooth, powerful stride that will help him make stops and retrieve pucks professionally. Merging his agility with a high hockey IQ offers ⁣a realistic path for ⁤him to become a capable NHL defenseman who can effectively manage a power play. However, his defensive game poses some challenges; he isn’t particularly physical, which is concerning given his‍ stature, and despite ⁤his skating proficiency, he can get ‌beaten more often than ⁣desired.

Reschny had an impressive rookie season in the WHL, achieving a point-per-game average while logging⁢ significant minutes for Victoria. He is a highly skilled, intelligent⁣ player adept at running a power play like a‍ professional. His quick skating and sharp edges ‌enable ‌him to maintain a fast pace and execute numerous high-quality plays on the move.⁣ While he may be on the smaller⁣ side, Reschny excels in creating scoring opportunities at the net and in penalty-killing situations. Although he has played as a ‌center in junior, a transition to the⁣ wing may ⁤be necessary at the professional level.

Kevin Light / Victoria ⁢Royals

Cootes is a well-rounded forward who is quite likable. He ‌is a competent ‌skater, if not outstanding,⁤ and competes with high energy. His⁣ offensive skills, including playmaking and finishing, are impressive, ‍allowing him to ⁣generate offense swiftly and directly. Though not particularly large, he compensates with ‌a strong‌ physical presence and a high compete level. There might be some discussions regarding his offensive capacity in the NHL, but early signs suggest that it could be sufficient for him⁤ to secure a spot.

Brady Martin is a ‌highly skilled forward with ⁢the ability to outmaneuver many NHL defensemen in one-on-one situations. While his technical skills are impressive, it is the combination of those skills with his‌ competitive nature that truly excites scouts. He plays with intensity, focusing on ‌high-percentage scoring opportunities and engaging in physical confrontations⁢ when necessary. Although his skating mechanics are not the most polished, his natural quickness allows him to navigate effectively at higher levels.

Milton Gastrin is a‍ well-sized⁤ center‍ who exhibits impressive skating ability and a strong competitive spirit. As captain of Sweden’s junior team, he is known for being a reliable two-way player who excels at ‌creating scoring⁢ opportunities near the net. Although he may not be regarded as a‍ dynamic offensive threat, he possesses sufficient skill and makes contributing plays alongside his responsible defensive game, suggesting⁢ he has the‌ potential to⁣ become a middle-six NHL center.

Conrad possesses numerous qualities desirable in an NHL player.⁢ Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, he is a defenseman capable of skating well and moving the puck effectively. He remains composed while handling the puck and excels at executing a solid first pass, successfully threading the needle from the offensive blue line. His strong skating stride⁤ enables him to accelerate quickly up the ice. Additionally, he closes in on opponents adeptly, generating turnovers through a combination of speed and physical presence. Although he was unexpectedly cut ⁣from Canada’s U18 squad, I believe if he starts strong, this‌ evaluation will prove justified.

Charlottetown Islanders

Ihs-Wozniak experienced a remarkable year in Sweden’s league as a 16-year-old. However, his performance with Sweden’s⁤ U18 team waned towards the season’s end, and he struggled during the Hlinka Gretzky tournament. I have confidence in his abilities⁢ and anticipate a strong draft year for him. Forwards measuring 6 feet 2 inches who ‌possess skating ability, offensive talent, and shooting prowess are rare, and Ihs-Wozniak seems poised to become an impactful professional winger. I would like ⁤to see ⁢him display greater competitive intensity at times, as I do not view him as a traditional playmaker.

</

Vilchinsky possesses the traits of a defenseman capable of making numerous‌ stops against opponents. Standing tall⁢ and possessing impressive mobility for⁢ his size, he plays with a commendable level ‍of physicality. While his‍ skills and hockey IQ may not⁤ be particularly thrilling, they are⁣ adequate for a professional first-pass defenseman, complemented by solid defensive capabilities.‌ Nevertheless, scouts have expressed some minor concerns regarding his fitness levels.

Boumedienne had a strong showing at 16 in the USHL, ‍starting off impressively, although his performance dipped noticeably in the latter half of the season. His skating ability raises hopes for his NHL potential, demonstrating both impressive foot speed and agility that allows him to glide‍ effortlessly across the ice. His puck handling⁣ is solid but not exceptional; while he makes plays and showcases above-average skills, he does not project as a high-end offensive player at advanced levels, and his puck⁤ decisions can be questionable at times.

Photo:

Steven Ellis / Daily Faceoff

Victor Eklund, the younger sibling of Sharks winger William Eklund, performed well last season against men and with Sweden’s U18 team. Like his ⁢brother, Victor is an exceptional ⁣skater with a high skill level and a strong competitive‌ spirit. However, he lacks a natural finishing ability and is somewhat undersized. William’s reputation surged throughout the season due to his high-end offensive capabilities. I see potential for solid offensive performance in Victor, but I’m looking for confirmation of his elite talent.

Steven Ellis ‌/ Daily Faceoff

Guite ⁣possesses undeniable offensive ‍skills. As a ⁣highly talented winger, he has the vision and puck skills necessary ⁤to excel in the NHL. His puckhandling can effectively break open plays, ‍complemented by his powerful shot that allows him to score from various distances. However, his skating is a significant concern; his stride lacks power and his technique appears somewhat awkward. Additionally, his ⁣level of competitiveness is merely average, leading some scouts to question whether his game will ‌translate successfully to the professional level, especially when considering⁤ his speed drawback.

Photo:

Bruno Girard / Chicoutimi ‍Saguenéens

Lakovic reached 39 points this season and was a key contributor to a strong WHL team in‌ Moose Jaw. ‌Standing at 6-foot-4, he demonstrates impressive skating ability for someone of‍ his size. His stride is both powerful and fluid, enabling him to evade ⁢defenders effectively. As⁢ a creative‍ offensive player, he possesses the ‌dexterity to frequently outmaneuver opponents. While Lakovic has a good⁢ sense for the ice, scouts remain somewhat uncertain about this aspect of his ⁢play. Nevertheless, several signs indicate he has the potential to become a successful professional forward.

Limatov is a compelling professional prospect who possesses ‌numerous appealing qualities.

In the pursuit ⁣of talent, NHL teams will be considering a specific player. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, ‍this defenseman demonstrates commendable skating abilities for his size. He possesses sufficient puck skills and playmaking capabilities⁢ to generate offense at advanced levels. While I ‌don’t see him fitting into a traditional NHL power play⁢ role, he has proven at lower tiers that he can execute creative plays during rushes and at the blue line. His⁣ ability to close in ⁣on checks is notable,⁢ complemented by his willingness to utilize his large frame. As a professional, he has the ⁤potential to offer significant ⁢two-way value.
