Doug Wilson regrets not betting one more time on Joe Pavelski.
In honor of Pavelski’s retirement last month, Wilson acknowledged the remarkable career of his seventh-round pick from 2003 — Pavelski ended up as the top goal and point scorer in his draft class — while also reflecting on allowing Captain America to depart from San Jose in free agency back in 2019.
“We should have found a way to get it done,” Wilson remarked during an interview with San Jose Hockey Now. “That was a mistake.”
From the outset, the odds were against Pavelski, who saw 204 prospects picked ahead of him. Additionally, he stood only 5-foot-11 and was not particularly quick.
“If we’re so clever, why did we wait until the seventh round to select him?” Wilson chuckled.
However, it was indeed the Sharks — under Wilson’s leadership alongside director of scouting Tim Burke and area amateur scout Pat Funk — who took a gamble by choosing Pavelski at No. 205.
A variety of attributes made Pavelski uniquely special in Wilson’s view.
“Truly, it was probably watching him during practice,” said Wilson. “This may sound unfair, but he reminded me somewhat of Stan Mikita. Stan always had this curiosity about how to improve. His intelligence about the game was off-the-charts—he consistently engaged in efforts every day aimed at getting better while also helping others improve.”
<pWilson joined the Chicago Blackhawks as a player back in 1977 when he was just 20 years old; Mikita played an influential role during that period.
“So observing Pavs put significant effort into small things,” continued Wilson. “We all witnessed his prowess with deflections and positioning; however, it was incredible to see such attention to detail from someone so young both offensively and defensively—and then execute those details against elite players globally. A lot stemmed from both his dedication and mental acuity.”
Pavelski thrived within various leagues including USHL, NCAA, and AHL before making his NHL debut with the Sharks in 2006-07 . He made an immediate impact by contributing 14 goals along with 14 assists across just 46 games amidst a star-laden team environment.
A couple extra inches may have added height for him , but that wasn’t primarily responsible for making him difficult for defenders to handle , especially near goalposts .
“His understanding concerning game mechanics along with how fearless he played were key,” explained Wilson . “While not oversized or immensely strong physically , he’d battle fiercely throughout all areas irrespective whether holding puck or not.”
“What set him apart near net – ability reflected properly upon pucks combined skillful positioning – blended bravery alongside brilliance which allowed knowing precisely when stay clear while timing movements right ; forcing defenders clashing together entirely different levels.”
