schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata to Grace Bournazel Castle
BOURNAZEL, France – A rare performance of Franz Schubert’s ”Arpeggione sonata” will highlight a concert on Aug. 5, 2025, at the château de Bournazel. The program also includes an inédite version for piano four hands, and the sublime Fantasy in F minor for piano four hands.
A Unique Instrument, A Singular Masterpiece
The Arpeggione, a short-lived experimental instrument from the 1820s, resembled a guitar played with a bow, similar to a cello. Despite its impracticality leading to its quick abandonment, it inspired Schubert to compose his Arpeggione Sonata in 1824, the only known piece written for the instrument.
Alto Violin Takes Center Stage
The concert will feature a performance of the celebrated sonata on the alto violin (viola). Jeanne Mathieu will perform on alto violin, accompanied by Alain Roudier and Ekaterina Polyakova on the Château de Bournazel’s Steingraeber D232 piano.
