Significant changes have taken place within the Detroit Tigers organization.
In addition to promoting infield prospects Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo for their Major League Baseball debuts, the Tigers have designated veteran third baseman Gio Urshela for assignment, which removes him from the 40-man roster, as stated by a source who cannot publicly disclose roster changes.
These roster alterations will be made official prior to Friday’s game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.
ON THE FARM: A Tigers prospect acquired in the Jack Flaherty trade is already demonstrating his ability to ‘nuke balls.’
Urshela, a veteran of nine MLB seasons, has been placed on waivers.
The decision to place Urshela on waivers was communicated to him following Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
At 32 years old, Urshela is still owed approximately $353,000 of his $1.5 million salary for 2024, which he accepted upon signing a one-year contract with the Tigers at the beginning of spring training. If he is claimed off waivers, the new team will inherit his contract.
By Sunday, the Tigers will determine whether Urshela clears waivers or is claimed. He will not participate in any games while he awaits a decision, as he has been removed from the 40-man roster, making space for the new infield prospects.
SPRING TRAINING: Will newcomer Gio Urshela secure the position of everyday third baseman for the Tigers in the 2024 season?
Given his remaining salary is manageable, Urshela could be a candidate for claims; however, he has struggled this season, hitting only .243 with five homers, 19 walks, and 49 strikeouts over 92 games with the Tigers, resulting in a .619 OPS. Defensively, he recorded minus-5 defensive runs saved at third base.
Although Urshela did not attract trade interest from other teams ahead of the July 30 deadline, he may garner more attention on the waiver wire now that teams won’t need to trade a prospect for him.
Should he clear waivers, he would be eligible to sign with a new team for a prorated minimum salary of approximately $174,000, while the Tigers would still be responsible for the remainder of his contract.
One of his most notable moments as a Tiger came on July 13, when he hit a walk-off two-run home run to left-center field, leading to an 11-9 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Comerica Park, concluding an impressive comeback. He also homered twice during a three-game series in early June against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Prior to joining the Tigers, Urshela played for five other teams throughout his 756-game MLB career: the Cleveland Guardians (2015, 2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2018), New York Yankees (2019-21), Minnesota Twins (2022), and the Los Angeles Angels (2023). He sustained a season-ending pelvic injury in mid-June of 2023 with the Angels, although it did not require surgery.
In 2024, he spent three weeks on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain.
Urshela has maintained a career batting average of .273 throughout his MLB tenure.
