The Detroit Tigers have promoted one of their leading prospects.
Infielder Jace Jung is making his MLB debut after being called up from Triple-A Toledo, according to sources who are not authorized to discuss roster changes publicly. He is expected to bat eighth and play third base on Friday against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.
Jung was selected by the Tigers as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 draft from Texas Tech and is the younger sibling of Josh Jung, who plays third base for the Texas Rangers.

The 23-year-old Jung has played the entire 2024 season in Triple-A Toledo, where he has recorded a .257 batting average, 14 home runs, 67 walks (a 16.1% walk rate), and 93 strikeouts (a 22.4% strikeout rate) across 91 games. While he is considered a below-average defender at third base, he performs at an average level when playing second base.
As a left-handed hitter, Jung ranks as the Tigers’ No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He is also listed as the No. 64 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s top-100 prospects list.
Last season, the Tigers shifted Jung from second base to third base during the Arizona Fall League to accommodate Colt Keith, who needed to play second base due to a shoulder injury he suffered earlier in his career. Jung has since assumed third base as his primary position in 2024, despite committing 12 errors in 65 games.
THE ANSWER:Tigers are in need of a third baseman. Will prospect Jace Jung be the long-term solution?
In addition to his time in Toledo, Jung participated in four games at Low-A Lakeland in early July as part of a rehab assignment following a right wrist injury. He hit a home run in one of those games, bringing his season total to 15 homers across 95 games during his third year in the minor leagues.
Jung was on the injured list for 19 days, from June 20 to July 9.
In his final 20 games with Triple-A Toledo, starting July 21, he posted a .210 batting average with one home run, 14 walks, and 22 strikeouts. However, he registered a .221 expected batting average and a whiff rate that was better than usual during this period, indicating that his underlying performance may have been more impressive than the raw numbers suggest.
Over all 91 games with the Mud Hens, Jung achieved a .235 expected batting average and a whiff rate of 27%, with notable difficulties against offspeed pitches and high-velocity fastballs.
He struggled particularly with fastballs hitting at least 95 mph, with a .179 average and a 34.8% whiff rate.
