On Sunday night, Detroit Tigers rookie Justyn-Henry Malloy sat out the game against the New York Yankees during the MLB Little League Classic. Following the game, the Tigers sent Malloy down to Triple-A Toledo.
During his time with the Tigers, Malloy, a designated hitter, recorded a batting average of .217, alongside eight home runs, 21 walks, and 74 strikeouts in 57 games, resulting in a .698 OPS. The 24-year-old may have a chance to return when rosters increase from 26 to 28 players at the start of September.
He has already participated in 181 games in Toledo throughout the 2023-24 season.
To comply with roster regulations before the series opener against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, the Tigers needed to option a player, trimming their roster from 27 to 26 players. For the Little League Classic, both the Tigers and Yankees were permitted an extra player, which the Tigers utilized to bring back Riley Greene from the injured list.
MORE ABOUT HIM: Justyn-Henry Malloy contributes a patient approach both at the plate and in his demeanor to the Tigers.
With Malloy’s absence, the Tigers now have only four right-handed hitters available among their position players, excluding the two catchers: Javier Báez, Andy Ibáñez, Spencer Torkelson, and Matt Vierling.
In his initial stint with the Tigers, Malloy held an impressive walk rate of 10.3%, coupled with an elite chase rate of 19.1%. However, he had below-average figures in terms of exit velocity (86.9 mph), whiff rate (36.2%), and strikeout rate (36.3%).
While he demonstrated discipline by not chasing bad pitches, he struggled to make adequate contact on balls in the strike zone.

Of the 57 games played, Malloy served as the designated hitter in 37. He started just 14 of the 19 games he played in left field. Defensively, he was recorded at minus-2 defensive runs saved and minus-4 outs above average across 116⅔ innings in that position.
Malloy made his MLB debut with the Tigers in early June.
