The Denver Nuggets have proudly confirmed the signing of nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook. With support from Nikola Jokic, this acquisition addresses many areas where the Nuggets have struggled, enhancing their ball handling, point of attack defense, transition play, and beyond.
Although Westbrook mostly came off the bench for the LA Clippers last season, Boston Celtics icon Paul Pierce believes he deserves a starting role in Denver. In a recent segment on Undisputed, Pierce shared his reasoning behind why Westbrook should take on that responsibility with the Nuggets.
“I would place him as a starter,” Pierce stated. “… You could then move Jamal Murray to shooting guard… Jamal Murray is a natural scorer. With Russ and Jokic facilitating playmaking duties now… I like him as a starter. You can allocate 28-30 minutes for him. I’m fond of this arrangement with Russ starting alongside Jamal Murray at shooting guard.”
Pierce further commented, “As long as [Nikola Jokic] continues performing at an MVP level, I believe [the Nuggets] can still make significant waves as contenders.”
During his 37 career starts with the Clippers (including postseason games), Westbrook posted averages of 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists while shooting 46.4% from the field and hitting 35.0% from beyond the arc. His last start in the NBA was marked by a victory over the Phoenix Suns in which he led without James Harden and Kawhi Leonard; during that game he achieved what is now known as having recorded only franchise history’s singular 15/15/15 performance for Clippers.
