NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin recently revealed a high school story to his fans, showcasing a more vulnerable aspect of himself. Currently driving the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, Hamlin is regarded as one of the premier drivers in the Cup Series, boasting an impressive total of 54 career wins.
During a recent interview, he reminisced about a challenging moment from his high school years. When discussing some of his worst dates, Hamlin recounted an uncomfortable experience at his sophomore prom.
“There was this girl I really wanted to take to prom. I kept pushing her for an answer and she kept delaying,” he recalled.
“Eventually, I managed to convince her so we went together; however, it was clear that she wasn’t genuinely interested.”
The evening took a turn for the worse when Hamlin noticed her dancing with his best friend towards the night’s end:
“As the night wrapped up…I saw her dancing with my best friend and approached them saying ‘Hey, what’s up?’ She replied honestly, ‘Well, to be truthful with you. I really wanted him to ask me to prom but he didn’t—so I just went with you.’”
In spite of this awkward memory from high school, Denny Hamlin’s life has taken a positive direction: he is now engaged to his long-time girlfriend Jordan Fish and they share two young daughters together.
“Stop Complaining” – Denny Hamlin defends NASCAR’s qualifying system
On a recent episode of his podcast “Actions Detrimental,” Denny Hamlin spoke in favor of NASCAR’s group qualifying system. He urged fans not to criticize it and stated:
“This is by far the fairest method available. Stop complaining! If your driver didn’t perform well this week—remember they benefitted last week when you didn’t voice any complaints.”
Hamlin believes that NASCAR’s current approach which separates drivers into two groups is equitable. Though he acknowledged that it may appear confusing on TV and proposed improvements.
“To make it more visually appealing on TV graphics, perhaps Group A could be placed on the outside while Group B stays inside,” he suggested. “Right now, for instance—the fast qualifier in Group A always occupies pole position but appears in one column while others line up differently.”
“At times your favorite driver may receive an advantageous spot; however it tends to equalize over time,” he added.
