The relationship between DeMarcus Cousins and‌ the⁢ Kings has‌ certainly had its share of ups and downs.

Selected as the No. 5 overall pick by Sacramento in the 2010⁢ NBA Draft, Cousins took a moment to reflect on his tumultuous time with the organization during and after his six-and-a-half years in the area code⁣ 916.

The four-time NBA All-Star ‍recently appeared on “The Draymond ⁣Green Show”, where he ‍recounted⁢ a conversation with former Kings player Francisco García that transformed his⁢ view of⁣ the Kings organization early in‌ his career.

“It was tough and confusing,” ‍Cousins stated. “Things were even harder for me since I came from Kentucky, where [Coach Jon Calipari] treated us like⁢ professionals. He prepared us for the next level. I will never forget ⁤this; much respect to my veteran, Francisco‍ Garcia. Cisco was my mentor. I remember during my rookie season, there was something⁣ simple ⁣I ⁤had to do.⁢ I can’t even recall ⁣what it was, but at ‍Kentucky, I had never been asked to do anything like that. When I joined the Kings, I figured things would be⁣ even more advanced.”

“This is ⁤elite-level basketball, so I had high expectations, to put it ‌mildly.⁣ It was a straightforward‍ task, and I remember Cisco saying something ⁣like, ‘Yo, you were really spoiled at Kentucky.’ I reflected on that, thinking, ‘Wow, maybe I was.’ Yet, I⁣ also thought, ‘This is an even more ‍elite environment, so why‌ is it ⁢perceived that I’m spoiled?’

“Ultimately, Cisco ended up getting traded ‍to the⁢ Houston Rockets. When he did, he reached out to me a little while later and said,‌ ‘Man, I remember⁢ the‍ day I called you spoiled.’ He ⁤admitted, ‘I was wrong. ⁢We ‍were in a ⁢rough situation.’ I knew I wasn’t imagining things.”

After excelling at Kentucky, Cousins made his⁣ NBA debut with a team that had just wrapped up ‍a 14th-place ⁢finish‍ in‍ the Western‍ Conference with a⁢ 25-57 ⁢record.

In his rookie season, Cousins posted‍ averages of 14.1 points⁢ and a team-leading 8.6 rebounds, yet the⁢ Kings (14-58) again ended up 14th in the West. Sacramento ⁤didn’t exceed⁤ 29 wins during⁢ Cousins’ time there until⁣ the 2015-16 season (33-49, 10th in the West) and the following 2016-17‍ season ⁣(32-50), which is ‍when he was traded to the ⁣New⁣ Orleans Pelicans.

Over 470 games spanning nearly seven seasons, ⁤Cousins averaged ⁤21.1 points on 45.9 percent shooting, alongside 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks,⁤ earning First Team All-Rookie honors and two Second Team All-NBA recognitions.

While Cousins undeniably established his legacy in Sacramento, he acknowledged the ⁣challenges‌ of maneuvering through the many changes the organization experienced while trying to climb out of the conference basement.

“I’m not here to ‌criticize ‍the Kings,” Cousins added. “In sports, teams have their ups‍ and ⁣downs. I just‍ happened to arrive when the organization was⁢ struggling and trying to ‍find its footing. The ownership that drafted me was ready to sell the team. There were numerous factors that I couldn’t control. Fans‍ may not‍ fully grasp‍ that aspect of the business or the sport. It’s easy to look at my situation and assign blame. To be honest, I⁤ made my share of mistakes. I did plenty of foolish things. But that’s ⁢all part of growing up and maturing. You stumble a few times. It was tough navigating that era.

“Having a new system every year⁤ is challenging.‌ Each coach brings a different mindset, and trying to succeed within a new framework⁤ is really hard. Plus, while players do create ⁢an atmosphere, the quality⁤ of an organization starts at the top. That holds true for any organization. Things just weren’t aligning. The Kings weren’t in a ‌position to thrive yet. I experienced two ownership ⁢groups, three GMs, and‍ six coaches during my six and a half‍ years. As I said, it was difficult to navigate. But at the end of the day, competing was my foundation.”

“My personal goal⁤ was to become ‌the best player I could be, irrespective of my circumstances,‍ and to find a way to stand out. That was my⁢ mindset while moving through that situation.”

After 16 seasons,⁤ the Kings finally broke their infamous playoff drought and are now on an upward trajectory toward long-term NBA success. Cousins described the newfound‍ success as “dope” in ‌an interview last year, and despite any past conflicts with the organization, he expressed happiness for the “incredible” fans and the City of Sacramento.
