Barcelona sporting director Deco has demanded an explanation from La Liga regarding the controversial disallowed goal of Robert Lewandowski during Sunday’s defeat to Real Sociedad.
Lewandowski’s strike in the 14th minute at Anoeta was ruled out by La Liga’s semi-automatic VAR offside technology (SAOT), which suggested his toe was fractionally offside. Real Sociedad ultimately secured a 1-0 victory.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick labeled the decision ”wrong” and a “huge mistake,” with some images seemingly demonstrating defender Nayef Aguerd‘s position ahead of Lewandowski, potentially impacting the call.
Barcelona’s Concerns with SAOT
Barça, however, believes the system malfunctioned in this instance and questions its accuracy. They publicly stated their dissatisfaction with the officiating and called for a clear explanation from La Liga regarding the decision made.
La Liga’s Stance
Despite facing criticism, the Refereeing Committee in Spain (CTA) stands firm behind its officials’ assessment. They maintain that the SAOT correctly identified Lewandowski’s offside position and insist that the decision was valid.
This incident further highlights the growing debate surrounding the implementation and accuracy of offsides technology in football. While supporters of SAOT view it as a significant advancement in ensuring fairer officiating, critics remain skeptical about its infallibility and potential for errors.
