You could call it a closing of the circle.
Darcy Kuemper certainly experienced that feeling on June 19 when, while showering, his wife knocked on the door to inform him he had been traded to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Pierre-Luc Dubois.
The news stirred a torrent of joyful memories for Kuemper, reminiscent of his first tenure with the Kings, who signed the young goalie in July 2017.
“It’s obviously a huge life change; I was really excited, actually super excited,” Kuemper shared in a recent discussion. “Getting traded brings a lot of changes, but returning to an organization I loved so much is special. I had such a great time during my last stint here. I was ecstatic because when you get traded, you could end up anywhere, so coming back to a familiar area where I enjoyed it is fantastic.”
Kuemper’s initial time in Los Angeles was short-lived.
In February of the 2017-18 season, he was traded to Arizona.
However, what his time in Los Angeles lacked in length was significantly compensated for by its impact on Kuemper’s career.
By working closely with Bill Ranford, the Kings’ long-time goaltending coach, Kuemper rejuvenated his career and, more importantly, rekindled his passion for being an NHL goaltender, a passion that had dimmed upon his arrival in Los Angeles.
Now, thanks to the trade in June, there’s an opportunity for a retelling of a story marked by renaissance and renewal.
Ranford recalled his initial conversation with Kuemper following the trade from Washington, noting how quickly Kuemper expressed his desire to leave last season behind.
“He mentioned that last season’s second half was disappointing, and he was eager to get back on track,” Ranford, who leads the Kings’ goaltending department, explained. “We had a solid discussion, and building a relationship with (goalie coach) Mike Buckley was crucial too. We jumped right into it. We’re looking forward to him playing the same caliber of hockey he did for us during his last time here.”

On his part, the laid-back Kuemper is reluctant to delve into how his time concluded in Washington, where he spent the last two seasons.
“To put it simply, it has given me a bit of hunger to come out and showcase my abilities and play my best hockey,” Kuemper said with a wry smile, seated in a nearly empty locker room at Quebec City’s Centre Videotron. “I think that sums it up nicely.”
It’s evident that Kuemper is highly motivated to move forward.

The span between the past and the present can certainly be calculated in years. However, the true assessment of Kuemper’s career trajectory and his personal and professional development is significantly more challenging to measure.
When Kuemper arrived in Los Angeles during the summer of 2017, he was uncertain about the future of his career following a tumultuous period in Minnesota. Collaborating with Ranford, they modified his style of play, leveraging Kuemper’s 6-foot-5 stature by encouraging a more upright stance. The two focused on refining Kuemper’s hand positioning.
Every day, he showed up eager to learn and to enhance his skills.
After his departure from the Kings via a trade deadline deal with Arizona in 2018, Kuemper established himself as a premier NHL starter with the Coyotes. Then, in the summer of 2021, he was traded to Colorado. Less than a year later, he celebrated by lifting the Stanley Cup as the leading goaltender for the Avs.
“He felt, in his own words, that he had hit rock bottom when he joined us from Minnesota and was uncertain about his career path,” Ranford shared. “Through his dedication, he managed to get back on track, enjoyed several successful seasons in Phoenix, and ultimately won the Cup with Colorado. His inaugural year with Washington was promising, but last season brought disappointments. This trade is beneficial for both teams, and we look forward to him blocking shots for us this year.”
It’s important to note that this isn’t merely a nostalgia trip for either Kuemper or the Kings. However, Kuemper and NHL analysts believe that the groundwork of positive past experiences is vital for a successful reunion.

“I see it as an opportunity,” Weekes remarked. “They’re a strong team, and it’s a perfect situation for him to reset, which I believe should be his mindset as he comes in.”
Weekes expressed admiration for the efforts of the Kings’ goaltending staff, particularly highlighting Kuemper’s success during his previous stint with the team.
“The Kings have excelled in their development strategy,” Weekes noted. “Their goaltending department is outstanding. Billy has done exceptional work. Although he’s now in a senior role overseeing things, they have consistently been ahead of the game.”
Brian Boucher, a former NHL player and highly regarded analyst, experienced a similar scenario in his career when he returned to Philadelphia for a second time, leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010.
“Returning to a familiar place can really boost your energy,” Boucher stated. “I’m sure Darcy will feel the same way. This should be a significant boost for him.”
Boucher is also confident that the fit is ideal, especially considering the evolution within the Kings organization and the young players poised to become key contributors in front of Kuemper.
“I’m a fan of their team,” Boucher commented. “They have high expectations of making the playoffs and competing.”
Josh Saulnier, co-owner of Ignite Athletics, a workout facility in Saskatoon that trains athletes of various ages, including professional hockey and football players, has known Kuemper since childhood. His younger brother played hockey alongside Kuemper, who returns home every summer to reconnect with family and friends while preparing for the new season.
Saulnier has witnessed Kuemper’s transformation from a young player who wasn’t fully dedicated to his off-season training into a focused, mature professional who is entirely self-driven.
According to Saulnier, while some players rely on their peers for motivation during the summer, Kuemper finds it within himself.
What continues to impress Saulnier is Kuemper’s humility despite his success.
“He’s incredibly easy to talk to and get along with,” Saulnier said.
If one were unaware of Kuemper’s status as an NHL player with a Stanley Cup championship, they would think he’s just an ordinary person who enjoys working out, Saulnier added.
“That’s what I appreciate about Darcy,” he remarked. “He interacts with everyone at the gym and has no qualms about being a regular guy.”
Much remains the same about the affable Kuemper, yet his experiences and perspective have notably evolved as he gears up to lead the Kings into the 2024-25 season.
Of course, he has a Stanley Cup ring.
However, more significantly, he has an 11-month-old son named Caden waiting for him at home after games and practices.
“Being a family man is a significant change,” Kuemper acknowledged. “Once you have your first child, that becomes your top priority in life, and it will always be that way. It provides extra motivation—there’s someone to play for, and I want to make him proud, even at such a young age.”
“From a hockey perspective, I’ve gained a variety of experiences since my last time here,” Kuemper added. “Through these experiences, you learn a lot—not just about them, but about yourself as well. Each new challenge or experience you encounter refines you as a player.”
