In the NASCAR Xfinity Series race held last Friday at Bristol, veteran driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. found himself embroiled in a heated exchange with fellow competitor Riley Herbst.
During the intense race, Earnhardt Jr. was spotted giving Herbst the finger. On his podcast, “Dale Jr. Download“, he reflected on the confrontation:
“Riley and I raced closely for quite some time, and there were instances where he outperformed me, whether through lane choice or during the restarts.
“I might have just passed him or realized I could overtake him. After the restart, he was quick for a few laps, and then I’d pick up speed, trying to get underneath him to pass.”

“As we entered the corner, I was alongside him, but he moved straight over. I have no issue with that. I wanted to pass him, but nothing he did annoyed me.”
He continued:
“Then as we exited the corner, I was underneath him, but he cleared me. We took a couple of turns, and when he entered the next corner, he didn’t drive to the top like he usually did.
“Instead, he went to the middle. So, I thought, ‘Alright, I’ll just shift to the top.’ I went right around him and thought, ‘Did he just let me go? I’m not really sure, but why did he do it that way?’ That’s what irritated me. We had just raced for 20 laps, and he was being stubborn. I was furious… but a few corners later, I told myself it was okay. It wasn’t a big deal.”
The event at Bristol held particular significance for Earnhardt Jr., being his first Xfinity Series start of the season. In spite of the earlier confrontation, he managed to finish in seventh place, while Herbst finished in 13th. Earnhardt Jr. has already expressed he does not plan to race in 2025, with his next expected appearance scheduled for 2026.
On a positive note, Herbst secured a spot in the Playoffs, which will kick off this weekend at Kansas Speedway.
