Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, the chief executive officer of the Dallas Mavericks, announced her plans to retire on December 31 during a statement made on Tuesday.
Marshall made history as the first Black woman to serve as CEO in the NBA when she was appointed by then-Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in March 2018.
“What began as a three-year commitment has turned into a much longer journey,” Marshall shared in a letter to Mavericks staff that was acquired by ESPN’s Andscape. “I value each day we’ve spent together. We have improved the Mavs, enhanced our communities, and elevated our industry. You have also helped me grow. I hope I leave things in a better state than I found them.”

Originally from Richmond, California, Marshall will celebrate her 65th birthday on December 15. She will continue to serve as a consultant for the Mavericks until December 2025.
