TORONTO — During his time with the St. Louis Blues, it wasn’t unusual to spot Craig Berube dining solo at Paul Manno’s Restaurant, enjoying a meal and a cold drink.
However, in Toronto, just days into his new role as coach of the Maple Leafs, Berube has already been featured in paparazzi-style photos meeting his players around the city.
“Yeah, Chief has to be careful about where he enjoys his drinks now,” joked Blues captain Brayden Schenn. “He probably has a few favorite local spots where he hangs out.”
In a recent one-on-one interview with The Athletic, Berube shared his thoughts on the increased media attention he’s receiving in the hockey capital of the world, his familiar chuckle resonating on the line.
“Oh, the media has been fine,” Berube remarked. “There are a lot of them, but it is what it is. You just adapt to it, right? But it’s been fine. The city is wonderful. The people are terrific. They are passionate about hockey here and just want to see the team succeed.”
Having taken the reins, Berube has seen the Maple Leafs perform reasonably well in their first seven games of the season. With a record of 4-3, they are preparing to host the Blues at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday night. The team has achieved victories over the New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Tampa Bay Lightning, although they suffered a 6-2 defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
“I’ve been pleased with all the games except for (Columbus),” Berube acknowledged. “The work ethic these players display is remarkable. I was uncertain about what to expect regarding attitudes and work ethic when I arrived.”
“But it’s been exceptional. They show up every day, very professional, and well-prepared, putting in the effort during practice. It’s largely driven by our captains. They are committed to excelling, and they engage in the necessary preparations to ensure they do, which is fantastic.”
Following the Maple Leafs’ first-round playoff defeat last season, the team parted ways with Sheldon Keefe, bringing in Berube in hopes that he can help lead them to greater success.
The objective is for the club to emulate the gritty style of the Blues that captured the Stanley Cup in 2019.
“We experienced significant success playing a specific way, which is quite different from the style the Toronto Maple Leafs have employed over the years,” Berube stated. “However, I genuinely believe our team has embraced it. The style we utilized in St. Louis has begun to manifest here. While it may not be as consistent as I would like, we are moving in the right direction.”
Such adjustments require time, but as past Blues players can confirm, Berube will indeed convey his message effectively in due course.
“The most important aspect is his ability to gain buy-in from all lines, defensive pairings, and the entire roster,” remarked Blues defenseman Colton Parayko. “It can be challenging at times, but he excels in this area.”
In the eighth game of Toronto’s schedule, Berube will face Schenn, Parayko, and others whom he previously coached in St. Louis.
“It will certainly be different,” Berube acknowledged. “I’m excited about the game and the opportunity to reconnect with some familiar faces. I developed lasting friendships with players, coaches, and management there. I anticipate running into them and look forward to that interaction. However, my focus remains on the game and how we want to execute. We need to bounce back after our loss last night.”
He has reviewed some footage of the Blues, who also have a 4-3 record following Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat against the Winnipeg Jets.
<p“Right now, I think they’re performing quite well defensively,” he commented. “They’ve made some changes and brought in (Philip) Broberg, who appears to be a solid player. They've strengthened their roster, which has been beneficial. It seems their goaltending has been robust as well.”
Berube was not surprised by the additions of Broberg and Dylan Holloway, having observed Blues general manager Doug Armstrong closely over the years.
“That was a smart move,” Berube noted. “Look at Edmonton; they were in cap trouble, and those players are at a great age after stepping up during last year’s playoffs. Doug is very astute and knowledgeable. He’s always monitoring the situation. He made an excellent offer and secured two talented players. That’s just how the game works.”
Additionally, Armstrong secured Jake Neighbours with a two-year contract extension on Tuesday, which will pay him $3.75 million in the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. The young forward enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-24.
“I’m thrilled for Jake,” Berube said. “I think highly of him. He’s the kind of player you want on your team. Every team would welcome Jake Neighbours. He’s a heart-and-soul player who gives his all in every game. That’s the type of character you desire in your roster.”
Aside from staying in touch with his former players and supporting them individually, Berube mentioned that he doesn’t dwell much on the team’s choice to part ways with him after beginning the 2023-24 season with a record of 13-14-1.
“In this profession, there’s a certain time frame you generally work with,” Berube explained. “It was probably time for a change. That’s my perspective. I don’t really ruminate on it. I had a wonderful experience there and cherished my time. Such occurrences are part of the game, and I understood that. I moved on, and so did they.”
However, the Blue Note logo will always hold significant meaning for Berube.
“It was a remarkable period,” he reflected. “Winning is challenging, and we achieved it. It’s an experience I will always treasure. I will always value St. Louis. That sentiment will never fade.”
