“Had you told me the day after last year’s banquet that I’d be attempting this again, I would have said you were crazy. Never.”
Yet, the craziness is evident—not just because Connor Hall has achieved back-to-back Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Weekly Series National Championships, but also as he currently leads the CARS Tour points and the Virginia Triple Crown championship, all while heading into the season’s most significant Late Model Stock race.

“This race isn’t really part of a series,” Hall noted. “I’m not here to focus on points. My aim is to win a grandfather clock. If that’s not attainable, then I want to optimize my performance and get the best outcome from any other scenario.”
“However, if you look back at recent history, typically the driver who takes home the clock is also likely to be the Triple Crown champion.”
It’s indeed remarkable that Hall finds himself in this position.
Initially committing to pursue a CARS Tour championship with Nelson Motorsports, Hall occasionally showcased his personal car at Langley Speedway, his home track. However, as success continued into 2024, he couldn’t resist the temptation to race.
“After the banquet, we stripped our national championship car down to its bare chassis, aiming for incremental improvements,” Hall explained. “Soon enough, it was resting on the surface plate and looking flawless, making it hard to resist racing it.”
His initial races contributing to NASCAR national points were with the Nelson No. 22 team, participating in the Florence Icebreaker and Southern National’s March Speed Week to prepare for the CARS Tour championship battle.
Though those races featured full fields, they still counted toward NASCAR points, leading Hall to claim the national championship while representing both the Nelson team and his personal No. 77 car, which primarily competed at Langley and Hickory.
The championship was secured with an impressive 18 victories.
Joey Dennewitz, a longtime agent, promoter, and racing enthusiast, transitioned from Spire Sports + Entertainment to become NASCAR’s Managing Director for weekly and touring divisions in 2023. To date, Hall is the only champion he’s known.
“Connor is as dependable as they come,” Dennewitz stated. “Not only is he one of the finest Late Model drivers of his time, but he also responds positively to any requests. He’s a remarkable ambassador for NASCAR and the Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series.”
Hall has always aimed for that reputation. As someone with a high winning percentage recently, he’s noticing an increase in jeers, but he accepts it for valid reasons.
“I mean, of course, it’s nice to be liked by such individuals, but my original goal when I embarked on this national championship journey was to earn respect,” Hall said.
“In the early stages of my Late Model career, I saw some success with weekly series wins and a couple of major events, but I wanted to stand out from the 95 percent of weekly racers.”
At 27, Hall still harbors ambitions for national touring, though he asserts that his ‘draft stock’ has never driven him.
“I grew up watching Philip Morris race,” Hall reflected on the four-time NASCAR national champion. “He was a highly decorated and extraordinarily successful short track racer who commanded respect.”
“Lee Pulliam, Josh Berry—they are role models. My goal is to reach the racetrack with my son someday and have people acknowledge, ‘yes, that’s Connor Hall; he achieved X, Y, and Z.’ I measure myself against those other esteemed national champions.”
Hall still believes he can make it to the Cup Series because what high-level race car driver doesn’t? However, he recognizes that he is now older, wiser, and more accepting of whatever happens.
“We started winning more significant races, but after turning down offers from the 30th team due to lack of funding for national touring, the calls began to cease,” Hall noted. “I gradually realized I’m still luckier than 99 percent of Americans because I have the opportunity to work on and drive a race car.”
“Consequently, I resolved to become the best Late Model Stock driver I could be. If this is my peak, I want to make the most of it.”
“I didn’t want my energy consumed by negativity, worrying about all the ‘what ifs’ or how I needed to create an opportunity where the odds were barely more than 1 percent.”
Over that three-year span, Hall acknowledged his personal growth, dedicating himself to relationship building and understanding the mechanical engineering side of the business. He recognized that this approach offered a more sustainable path to building his racing career than being narrowly focused on results alone.
“It’s cliché, but it’s a reminder that the summit can appear daunting, tempting you to rush when you should be taking your time and seeking the most effective way to ascend,” he remarked. “I realized I could choose to advance or just keep looking back.”
According to Hall, Chad Bryant, for whom he raced in the prior three seasons, played a significant role in teaching him the importance of patience. Despite not racing together currently, they remain best friends.
“He truly changed my life,” Hall stated. “Not just because of the Late Model and Truck Series opportunities or the connections I made, but in how I approach racing. He’s been an incredible mentor.”
“I used to be so concerned about my performance that Chad helped me understand that I could achieve my goals by slightly altering my approach. I’m considering returning to pursue my mechanical engineering degree. Chad accelerated many aspects of my journey and made me realize that the 21-year-old who thought he knew everything was simply young and naïve.”
Hall also referred to Pulliam, who has carved a successful niche as a crew chief and team owner, determining that this path became more viable before turning 40 if he wished to remain in racing.
He acknowledged Berry, who simultaneously achieved race victories and managed JR Motorsports’ driver development program.
“Now, when my blue 77 emerges from the trailer, I feel immense pride in it because I’m more involved than ever,” Hall emphasized. “I want to win from behind the wheel, but I take immense pride in what I’ve invested in building this car.”
“Looking at that car, I think, ‘Wow, what an incredible race car,’ and I hope others perceive it the same way. Ultimately, I firmly believe my purpose in life is to be a race car driver, and I have dedicated every resource and ounce of energy I have toward that goal.”
