On Friday, Clayton Keller was appointed as the inaugural captain of the Utah Hockey Club.
The 26-year-old forward becomes Utah’s first captain following the NHL Board of Governors’ approval to establish a franchise in Salt Lake City on June 13. Before this, Oliver Ekman-Larsson served as the captain of the Arizona Coyotes from September 13, 2018, until his trade to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23, 2021.
“I am incredibly honored to be chosen as the captain of the Utah Hockey Club,” said Keller. “I appreciate this opportunity and want to extend my gratitude to the entire organization for their faith in me. I recognize the privilege it is to lead in the NHL, and it’s a significant honor to know that management, coaches, and my teammates trust me to guide this team. It’s a major responsibility, and I have been preparing for this my entire life. We have a room full of exceptional leaders, and together, we will strive to achieve our goal of becoming a playoff contender.”
Keller, who served as an alternate captain for Arizona in the past two seasons, led the Coyotes in goals (33), assists (43), and points (76) during the 2023-24 season, which marked the franchise’s last year in the greater Phoenix area. He was also a finalist for the 2017-18 Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s rookie of the year, which was won by Mathew Barzal of the New York Islanders.
“Being named captain of the Utah Hockey Club is a tremendous honor that Clayton has truly earned,” stated Utah general manager Bill Armstrong. ”Clayton has developed into a remarkable hockey player and has become an even better individual, gaining the respect of everyone in the organization. He is eager to face the challenges that come with being a captain and will have a strong leadership group around him to support and guide the team.”
Selected No. 7 overall by Arizona in the 2016 NHL Draft, Keller signed an eight-year contract on September 4, 2019, which commenced in the 2020-21 season. He suffered a fractured femur on March 30, 2022, but after surgery and six months of rehabilitation, he bounced back with career highs of 37 goals, 49 assists, and 86 points over 82 games. He was also a finalist for the Masterton Trophy, which honors the player who exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
“Clayton’s development as a leader over the past few years has been incredible, and his relentless quest for improvement and his desire to win will inspire all of us,” said Utah coach Andre Tourigny. “He is an elite player who competes with intensity and purpose every day. He possesses high character and shows genuine care for his teammates, earning the respect of everyone in the organization. He will be an outstanding captain, and I am very pleased to have Clayton leading us.”
Utah will play its first regular-season game against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET (ESPN, ESPN+).
Currently, the Seattle Kraken remain the only NHL team without a captain.
