Charles Barkley could be the most sought-after free agent on the market next year, provided he becomes available.
As Warner Bros. Discovery engages in a legal battle with the NBA, aiming to reclaim a share of the league’s media rights slated for 2025, a list of potential suitors for Barkley is already forming. He stands as the company’s premier star in sports.
Burke Magnus, ESPN’s content chief, expressed on Tuesday his interest in acquiring Barkley if he becomes available. During a Front Office Sports conference in New York, when asked about the possibility of seeing Barkley at ESPN, Magnus responded affirmatively.
“Absolutely,” Magnus stated at the “Tuned In” conference. “That would be an ideal scenario. … I would be dishonest if I claimed we weren’t keen on Charles. The entire industry has an interest.”
Mark Lazerus, the chairman of NBC, also conveyed his interest in Barkley, especially since NBC is set to begin broadcasting the NBA in the upcoming season.

‘Sunday Night Basketball’ on NBC — part of new NBA media rights deal — could be a hit
However, it remains uncertain whether Barkley would express interest in ESPN or NBC. The Basketball Hall of Famer, who has been a vital part of TNT’s legendary “Inside the NBA” studio program since 2000, stated in August that he intends to stay with TNT Sports even after the loss of the NBA rights. Barkley is currently in the third year of a 10-year, $210 million contract.
“I cherish my TNT Sports family,” Barkley, 61, asserted in an August statement. “My top priority has always been and will continue to be our team and ensuring we remain united for as long as we can.
“We have the most incredible people, and they excel in their roles,” he continued in his statement. “I’m excited about continuing to collaborate with them on our existing shows as well as exploring new ones together in the future. This is the only place that feels right for me.”
In July, Disney, NBC, and Amazon secured the bidding rights for the NBA’s upcoming media deal, which will commence in the 2025-26 season and span 11 years. The combined value of the agreements with these three companies is $77 billion. WBD did not acquire any rights and has since filed a lawsuit against the NBA to assert what it claims are matching rights from the present contract.
That lawsuit is presently in the New York State court system, with a trial scheduled to commence in April.
