Chandler Smith, previously recognized as a promising figure in the NASCAR world, now finds himself facing an uncertain path. As the 2024 season concludes, the 22-year-old driver is without a contract for the upcoming year.
Currently piloting the No. 81 car for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, speculation abounds regarding his potential absence from the team in 2025, particularly with the introduction of new, younger drivers William Sawalich and Taylor Gray at JGR.

Throughout his career, Smith has secured five wins in the Craftsman Truck Series and three in the Xfinity Series, showcasing consistent performance with 20 top-10 finishes in 40 races. However, after starting from the pole position, he finished 13th in his latest race, which marks his lowest ranking since Darlington.
In a conversation with Bob Pockrass from FOX Sports, Smith discussed the volatility of his current situation.

“Well, I don’t have a ride for next year, Bob. I might end up working at my dad’s construction company, and it’s possible I may be done by the end of this year. So, with that in mind, I won’t hold back at Martinsville,” he stated.
A significant challenge for Smith, as it is for many drivers, is the issue of funding. Despite his accomplishments and skillset, the absence of financial support remains a major barrier to securing a position for 2025. In motorsports, sponsorship is as critical as talent.
“There aren’t many seats available. The few that exist require substantial financial backing, and I don’t have deep pockets,” Smith confessed.
As JGR introduces new talent, Smith’s prospects remain ambiguous. There are rumors about him potentially joining Front Row Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series for 2025, but this appears increasingly unlikely.
Smith remains realistic about his situation.
“If it’s meant to be, it will happen,” he reflected.
