Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – During the intermission of Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils at the Prospect’s Challenge, Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams spoke with Brayton Wilson. His discussion included insights about the prospects on the ice, but he began by addressing one restricted free agent who remains unsigned. Peyton Krebs received a qualifying offer but has yet to put pen to paper. Adams remarked,
“We’ll see how the next couple of days unfold, and I’d like to wait a little longer before discussing it, but these matters can often take time as it is a process. We will assess where we stand in 48 hours.”
Turning back to the prospects participating this weekend, Buffalo currently holds a 1-1-0 record, although they have clearly outperformed their opponents in both games. Adams expressed,
“There is obviously a wealth of talent on the ice, and everyone in the hockey community is aware of our skillset, but what I appreciate is the intensity with which our players are competing, their second efforts, their aggressiveness on the puck, and their success in winning puck battles.”
“In recent weeks, we’ve had discussions with our young players about our team identity and our goal to be a tough team to play against. While skill is important, hard work must come first. I believe these players have truly embraced this philosophy, as effort and competition are what allow their skills to shine through and earn recognition.”
Once the Prospect Challenge concludes, the Sabres will commence their training camp on Wednesday. Adams sees this as a valuable opportunity for several players,
“Lindy and I spoke to the rookies a couple of days back, emphasizing that with this unique training camp and our upcoming trip to Europe, these games present their chance to demonstrate their readiness to make a meaningful impact. They’re taking advantage of this opportunity because their role is to make our choices more challenging.”
Despite this, Adams mentioned that he will remain cautious about placing young players into situations that might overwhelm them,
“I firmly believe that it’s essential not to rush young players into roles they aren’t prepared for; however, when they demonstrate they’re ready, we must find ways to integrate them.” Zach Benson was an
Konsta Helenius has participated in two games during this tournament, yet he has not accumulated any points. Nevertheless, he has performed well as he adapts to his first experience of North American hockey.
Adams remarked, “I’m incredibly impressed. This environment is challenging to navigate. The pace is intense, with a lot of physicality; players are highly energized and active. He’s just an 18-year-old, yet he demonstrates remarkable situational awareness, being cognizant of everyone’s positioning on the ice. He shows great composure with the puck and is capable of evading hits. For instance, he got hit in his first shift last night, got angry, and immediately retaliated.”
“He’s also quite strong on his skates, making this a valuable introduction to playing on a smaller ice surface, where the action unfolds rapidly. He is going to be an excellent player for us.”
The Sabres currently lack a captain following the trade of Kyle Okposo to the Florida Panthers last March. Lindy Ruff is still getting acquainted with the players, which means a decision regarding the captaincy won’t be made immediately when camp begins.
“We have had extensive discussions about this as a staff, and Lindy has emphasized from the start the importance of getting to know the players. He dedicated a considerable amount of time over the summer, either in-person or via phone,” stated Adams. “But nothing replaces seeing them in practice. We have a plan in mind, and I believe we’re aligned on the timing, but it will likely take some time into training camp before a decision is made.”
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen appeared in 54 games last season, establishing himself as the Sabres’ No. 1 goaltender. Meanwhile, Devon Levy returned to Rochester and significantly enhanced his skills. This raises the question of what to do with the 22-year-old. Adams commented,
“In today’s league, having two, or even three, capable goaltenders is essential for winning games. We entered the off-season confident in our goalies, UPL and Devon, yet we recognized the need to secure an experienced NHL goaltender. That’s why we brought in (James) Reimer. We’ll observe how training camp unfolds and remain flexible with our options, allowing the situation to develop organically.”
“What I appreciate is our depth in that position and the talent we possess; that is the most critical factor.”
In the Prospects Challenge, two young drafted goaltenders are making their mark. Scott Ratzlaff, at 19 years old, was selected by the Sabres in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. He made an impressive performance by allowing just one goal on 21 shots during the Sabres’ 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. On the other hand, Ryerson Leenders, who celebrated his 18th birthday in June, faced three goals on 14 shots while competing against the New Jersey Devils. He was the Sabres’ seventh-round pick last June.
As the Sabres prepare to leave for Germany on September 24, Ruff will have only three actual days for training camp in Buffalo. Adams mentioned that this situation creates a unique dynamic.
“Everything will move quickly, and I believe that even on Day 1, our practice format will change slightly. There won’t be as much mixing of players; instead, it will be closer to our finalized team, followed by a couple of practices and a scrimmage. You’ll see more of our squad playing together in those initial two games, as we won’t have many opportunities beyond that. We plan to take 27 players to Europe—while we can’t have a full 27-man roster, we will have additional players along, so we will likely need to decide on that group’s makeup before the second exhibition game,” Adams stated.
Adams expressed that this rapid progression shouldn’t be viewed negatively.
“In many respects, this is beneficial, as it brings the team together swiftly. We get to connect closely with the players, and I’m truly enthusiastic about the opportunity to be in Europe. I see this as a fantastic chance for team bonding; our players will have the opportunity to spend quality time together off the ice, making it an incredible trip for us,” he explained.
