The Warriors have finalized a contract extension with Moses Moody for three years and $39 million. That’s undeniably a bargain.
Happy Wembsday!
What can we expect in Year 2 for Wemby?
This evening marks the start of Victor Wembanyama’s second season in the NBA. His debut was historic, and The Bounce extensively covered all aspects of Wemby last season. Guess what? We’re doing it again this year. Wemby is a breathtaking basketball phenomenon that effectively addresses the question, “Who will succeed LeBron, Steph, and KD once they retire?” It’s the 20-year-old French sensation, previously measured at 7-foot-4 last year, now at 7-foot-3 this year, yet we all know he is truly 7-foot-5.
Let’s explore the potential milestones Wemby might achieve based on his impressive rookie statistics, especially considering the historic nature of his debut season. For reference, we will focus on stats following the NBA/ABA merger (1976-77) since Wilt Chamberlain’s statistics overshadow everyone else’s achievements.
- Scoring: Trae Young holds the highest post-merger scoring average for a second-year player at 29.6 points per game in 2019-20, improving his average by 10.5 points from his rookie season. Wemby would need to elevate his score (21.4) by 8.3 points per game to exceed Young’s record. Can Chris Paul facilitate that growth as his point guard?
- Rebounding: Both Shaquille O’Neal and Andre Drummond share the Year 2 record with averages of 13.2 rebounds per game. Drummond nearly doubled his rookie average (7.6) during the 2013-14 season, playing about 12 more minutes per game in his second year. Shaq, on the other hand, saw a decline from 13.9 as a rookie nearly 30 years ago. Wemby would need an increase of 2.7 rebounds per game to surpass them.
I can guess what’s on your mind. What about assists, blocks, and steals, Zach? Could Wemby also reach outstanding second-year averages in those categories? I’m thrilled you asked. I’ve included those figures in our new Thursday preview series, leading into the weekend schedule.
Honestly, I’m unsure if we can make unrealistic predictions about Wemby. What will be compelling is observing his growth in efficiency and shot creation. There will undoubtedly be challenges and opportunities for improvement. History will unfold, but we can’t be certain if it brings the Spurs, who finished 22-60 last season, nearer to the Play-In this year.
And that leads us to what I’m dubbing The Capitulation Station!
Here, I confronted two colleagues regarding their previous skepticism about Wemby. By “confronted,” I mean I posed a question to each of them concerning their doubts about Wemby, and they graciously provided their responses. Our two subjects in focus? My friends, James Edwards III and Jay King.
James, you expressed significant doubts about Wemby, noting that there were flaws that had been overlooked during the hype phase (July 7, 2023). What are your thoughts as he approaches Year 2? JE3: I still feel that the narrative surrounding Wemby is somewhat exaggerated, yet I believe he is set to become one of the top, if not the top, defensive players in the NBA this year. Even seasoned veterans hesitated to attempt layups near the rookie, regardless of his position on the court. His defensive versatility was evident right from the start.
I remain uncertain about his ability as a leading shot creator. He takes some questionable shots, and I’m not fully convinced about his jump shot just yet. His slender frame makes him susceptible to being thrown off-balance, and he doesn’t appear to have gained much size. With Chris Paul on board, Wemby is likely to get better shot opportunities this season. However, I’m still skeptical about him becoming a premier shot creator on par with players like, say, Kevin Durant.
Jay, you’ve likened Wemby to Ante Žižić and referred to him as a “malnourished Andre Drummond.” Are you now prepared to accept Wemby as your player and potential savior in Year 2?
Jay: A savior? That’s impossible. I’m beyond redemption. However, to be completely honest, my comparison of the most promising prospect since LeBron James to Ante Žižić was purely in jest. (Don’t let the Spurs fans know I was joking; they still quote those tweets in rage, and it amuses me.)
As for what to expect from Wembanyama in his second season, I can’t say for certain, but the possibilities seem endless. Could he average five blocks per game? Why not? It wouldn’t surprise me if he secures a spot on the first team All-NBA and claims the Defensive Player of the Year award. Each game, he will likely make four or five plays that no one else in basketball history could replicate. The Spurs used his rookie season to figure out how to leverage his skills. Now, they have a clearer idea. This journey is just starting to take off.
James and Jay haven’t capitulated enough for my liking. Victor, it’s time to hold them accountable!

The NBA is probing into Joel Embiid’s absence?
Yesterday, as the 76ers prepared to host the Bucks, there was considerable buzz about the league office investigating star player Joel Embiid’s upcoming and uncertain absences. We’ll provide further updates as more information surfaces. For now, it feels like the NBA is attempting to reinforce its load management policy and keep it transparent. However, I find it puzzling that they are investigating a player who struggles to maintain his health.

About Last Night
It marked our first full night back with the NBA.
Did you feel it last night? The exhilarating surge of basketball games that flooded your screen? It was fantastic, wasn’t it? Setting up four games in multiview on League Pass, tuning into national broadcasts on another screen, and tossing clever and insightful comments into various group chats filled with opinions and rebuttals. The inaugural full night of the NBA season engulfed us, and it was a delight. Everything about the evening radiated joy, except for some broadcasts testing out unusual camera angles like this:
Feeling a bit motion sick? Like you were watching the film “Fallen,” where a demon spirit floats around searching for a new body to occupy while Denzel Washington tries to uncover the mystery? Let’s avoid that in NBA broadcasts moving forward! But the basketball itself was entertaining! Here’s a recap of the night:
Suns 116, Clippers 113: There was a moment in the third quarter where it seemed like a vintage Houston James Harden was playing for the Clippers. The 35-year-old former MVP scored 16 of his 29 points right after halftime and was dominating the Suns. However, Durant and Devin Booker rallied Phoenix in the fourth before Bradley Beal sealed the victory in overtime. Fans are already raving about the new Clippers arena.
Pacers 115, Pistons 109:
The Pistons seemed poised for victory but were outscored 33-19 in the final quarter. It’s reassuring to see them back to their earlier form (In all seriousness, they performed much better).
Bucks 124, 76ers 109: With neither Embiid nor Paul George for Philadelphia, Tyrese Maxey attempted 31 shots to score 25 points. Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo combined for an impressive 55 points, along with 23 rebounds and 13 assists.
Magic 116, Heat 97: Orlando took control of the game after halftime, dominating with a 39-18 third quarter. Paolo Banchero, only 21 years old, excelled with 33 points and 11 rebounds, while Contract Year Jimmy Butler managed just three points on 1-for-8 shooting.
Hawks 120, Nets 116: This matchup was truly entertaining! Ben Simmons showed some promise! Trae Young scored 30 points and made 12 assists. Cam Thomas was outstanding with 36 points, making his case for this season’s scoring title. There were shoving matches and Nic Claxton received a flagrant-2 ejection.
Hornets 110, Rockets 105: Rookie coach Charles Lee (39 years old) displayed his coaching skills! LaMelo Ball recorded 34 points and 11 assists, while Tre Mann contributed 24 off the bench to secure the win against Houston.
Pelicans 123, Bulls 111: Without Zion and Trey Murphy III, and considering Murray’s injury, New Orleans faced challenges but still emerged victorious.
Grizzlies 126, Jazz 124: The emerging Big Three of Ja Morant (22 points, 10 assists), Desmond Bane (24 points), and Santi Aldama (27 points) led the charge.
Cavaliers 136, Raptors 106: Toronto might want to pay attention to Sam Vecenie’s mock draft.
Warriors 139, Blazers 104: Portland, you likely have that link saved. 👆
