ATLANTA — The Braves have faced numerous challenges this year, so it’s no surprise that their postseason destiny will be determined on the final day of the regular season.
“We have an opportunity to make the postseason,” stated Braves first baseman Matt Olson. “It’s like any other day; we need to show up and win tomorrow. Of course, we would have preferred to secure it today for an easier path tomorrow.”
Both the Braves and Mets require just one win in Monday’s doubleheader to clinch a Wild Card spot. Conversely, if either team is swept, the D-backs will advance to the playoffs.
The Braves will feature rookie standout Spencer Schwellenbach in the first game. So far, Schwellenbach has allowed only one run in 14 innings pitched against the Mets, holding a 1.79 ERA over his seven starts against playoff contenders in the National League.
If Schwellenbach falls short, the Braves plan to turn to Chris Sale for the second game. Sale needs four strikeouts and to maintain his ERA below Tarik Skubal’s 2.39 to become the first pitcher since Johan Santana in 2007 to win MLB’s Triple Crown. However, the veteran would prefer to remain available to start Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Padres in San Diego on Tuesday.

Sale and Schwellenbach were both slated for the doubleheader when Atlanta opted to rely on Charlie Morton’s performance on Sunday.
Unfortunately for Morton, the game did not unfold as he or the team had hoped, possibly marking the last start of his career. The 40-year-old pitcher gave up a three-run homer to Michael Massey before the first out of the game was recorded and a two-out solo homer to Hunter Renfroe in the fourth.
“I’m not sure how to process this because of the outcome,” Morton said. “I feel like I let the team down due to the results.”
If the Braves had secured a victory, they would have entered the Wild Card Series with both Sale and Schwellenbach at their disposal. However, the accountability extended beyond Morton, who was removed after pitching 4 1/3 innings.
Despite having the Royals pitch only their non-postseason roster locks through the seventh inning, the Braves managed to score only two runs. Alec Marsh pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned), bringing his ERA down to 4.53.
Atlanta’s only runs came from Gio Urshela’s leadoff homer in the third inning and Ramón Laureano’s RBI single in the fourth. The Braves also encountered untimely outs.
Orlando Arcia was thrown out attempting to advance to third base on a pitch that narrowly missed Royals catcher Freddy Fermin, finishing the top of the third with Marcell Ozuna at bat.
In the fourth inning, Jorge Soler was also thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a sharp grounder to third base.
“It’s not a perfect game,” Snitker acknowledged. “These players aren’t perfect, and it’s always challenging in those situations, especially with our lineup’s positioning.”
Completing a three-game sweep over the Royals would have allowed the Braves to prepare for the Wild Card Series without the need to go through a doubleheader first. Yet, this season, filled with injuries and obstacles, has not lent itself to such favorable outcomes.
