BOSTON — As the Brad Stevens era in the Celtics front office heads into its fourth season, Baylor Scheirman emerges as a unique figure. He is the only first-round selection that Stevens has retained during his tenure as president of basketball operations for the Celtics. When Scheirman finally steps onto the court for Boston, he will be the first rookie first-rounder to don the Celtics uniform since Aaron Nesmith and Payton Pritchard did so in the 2020-21 season.
Prior to Scheirman, Stevens had traded away the team’s first-round picks for three consecutive years. Scheirman has broken that pattern. “Since summer league, I’ve dedicated a lot of time to my physique, working on my body and aiming to add lean mass,” Scheirman explained. “I’ve managed to gain around 10-15 pounds in that process. Additionally, I’ve been refining my shot to get it off more quickly, working closely with (assistant coach) Craig (Luschenat) and Sam Hauser, who have provided me with excellent tips and techniques for implementing these changes in games.”
Scheirman was measured at 6-foot-6 and 202 pounds during the NBA combine. This additional weight is expected to enhance his ability to compete against the league’s more physically imposing wings. He noted that the Celtics encouraged him to increase his muscle mass to prepare for his rookie season and expressed that they have been “very pleased” with his progress.

Throughout his college career, Scheirman predominantly generated offense from the perimeter, yet he also recorded a higher number of defensive rebounds than any other Division I player since at least the 1999-00 season. While this statistic benefits from an extra fifth year due to the COVID era, he was still one of the top defensive rebounders at his position during his time at Creighton and South Dakota State. If this skill translates to the NBA level, it could bolster his case for minutes as both a small forward and a power forward.

“I altered my diet,” he stated. “I’m grateful for (team chef) Steve (Bekerian) in the kitchen, who helped me figure things out. The availability of the kitchen here is great; I can take full advantage of it while at the facility and get two or three meals each day. I’ve also been taking Creatine, working to shed some fat.”
The Celtics first invited Scheirman for a predraft workout in 2022, shortly after he concluded his final season at South Dakota State. He later transferred to Creighton, where he averaged 12.8 points per game during his first year with the team and subsequently gained recognition as a third-team AP All-American the next season. In his final NCAA campaign, he averaged 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, shooting 38.1 percent from three-point range on a high number of attempts. The Celtics were impressed with his physical transformation while competing in the Big East.
Shooting against NBA defenses will present a greater challenge. Scheirman noted that he is learning from Hauser, who ranked 11th in three-point shooting percentage last season. The two were grouped together in workout sessions at the Celtics’ practice facility early in the offseason.
“He’s among the top shooters in the league and played a vital role on last year’s championship team,” Scheirman said. “Working alongside him, I’ve gained insights not only about shooting but also about his overall routine, including how he prepares for workouts and what he does afterward, sharing various tips on getting quicker shots off.”
The Celtics have more in mind for Scheirman than merely being a shooter.
“He’s a solid shooter, but he brings much more to the table,” Hauser affirmed. “He possesses a great understanding of the game and showcases a good level of craftiness.”
During the initial two days of practice, Joe Mazzulla observed that Scheirman is adjusting well to the increased physical demands.
“On Day 1, adapting to the NBA defense was quite challenging,” Mazzulla remarked. “However, I felt he made significant physical adjustments from Day 1 to Day 2, showcasing impressive defensive plays today. That’s the trajectory a young player should aim for. The key is whether they can defend, execute a defensive system, and rebound. He improved in those areas from Day 1.”
The Celtics emphasize that Scheirman should remain focused on the fundamentals. While he feels confident in his offensive capabilities, he understands that his opportunities for playing time depend heavily on his defensive performance.
