Evan: Now residing in Western New York, the nearest NHL team to me is the Buffalo Sabres. They have always held a special place in my heart, especially now that Bowen Byram is part of the team. As he embarks on his first full season with the Sabres, I expect him to shine on the top pairing and achieve a solid 40-point season.
Adrian: I foresee the Toronto Maple Leafs making a trade that will stir the pot, but it won’t involve Mitch Marner. My prediction is that they will do something regarding newly demoted John Tavares.
Jess: I don’t mean to echo Evan, but I also have a fondness for the Sabres; my dad grew up in Western New York and followed them closely. Among the teams that have languished in a sort of purgatory in recent seasons—like Ottawa, Detroit, and Buffalo—I believe the Sabres will be the team to make a significant leap and contend for a Wild Card spot this season, or at least be in the race during the final weeks, much like Detroit did last year.
Ezra: I’ll keep my focus on the East—Jacob Markstrom will outshine Linus Ullmark and help guide New Jersey to a playoff spot, while Ottawa struggles to remain relevant. The revamped Devils defense is significantly stronger than Ottawa’s, which took a hit this offseason with the departure of Jacob Chychrun and, to a lesser extent, Erik Brannstrom.
Jackie: I’m borrowing an idea from Adrian below: Philadelphia Flyer prodigy Matevi Michkov will win the Calder Trophy. I’ll add that a Russian player will claim the Calder, Vezina, and Hart trophies in 2025.
Eddie: Adam Fantilli was among my favorite prospects in the 2023 draft class. He’s a player with immense potential, but his rookie season was cut short due to a severe ankle injury. Previously on track for 45 points, I believe that with a full season and another year of development, he could realistically reach 30 goals this year.
How about any team forecasts across the NHL?
Evan: I’ve predicted this the last two seasons and been right both times—why not make it three in a row? The Pittsburgh Penguins, despite all the offseason changes orchestrated by Kyle Dubas and his team, will miss the postseason. Of course, this is all part of a scheme to bring Sidney Crosby to Colorado!
Adrian:
I believe that this year’s Rookie of the Year award won’t be claimed by a player selected within the top three picks of the entry draft. My intuition suggests that the outcome of this draft class may diverge from common expectations.
Jess: While I appreciate many of the offseason moves made by the Edmonton Oilers, such as signing Jeff Skinner, I foresee potential challenges regarding their salary cap in the upcoming season. These difficulties may arise sooner than anticipated. St. Louis has already presented offer sheets to Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, and if Edmonton intends to retain one or both players, they will need to consider the long-term implications, given that Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Evan Bouchard will all be seeking new contracts within the next couple of summers. Therefore, while my prediction could create a domino effect rather than occur in isolation, I reckon they will begin to encounter cap-related issues this season due to these offer sheets.

On the other hand, we might witness the conclusion of an era with Tampa Bay potentially missing the playoffs. This needs to happen for the youth movement in the Atlantic Division, as teams like Buffalo, Ottawa, Montreal, and Detroit all aim to take the next step.
Eddie: There has been a significant buzz surrounding the Nashville Predators this offseason. They made substantial free agency moves, bringing in players like Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault following a surprising playoff run last season. While I believe the hype is justified, I can easily envision this team underperforming.
