According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Brooklyn Nets forward Ben Simmons is set to participate fully in training camp ahead of the 2024-25 season.
His agent, Bernie Lee, has confirmed that the 28-year-old athlete will not have any restrictions after undergoing back surgery for the second time in three years on March 14.
“Ben is fully cleared and ready to be a full participant at the start of camp,” Lee stated, as per Haynes. “He is looking forward to getting started.”
During the 2023-24 season, Simmons played in only 15 games for the Nets.
Injuries have characterized Simmons’ time with the Nets, as he has participated in only 57 games total since joining the team in a blockbuster trade for James Harden in September 2022.
After earning the 2018 Rookie of the Year award and making three consecutive All-Star appearances from 2019 to 2021, Simmons’ performance has significantly declined in Brooklyn. Despite his historical shooting inconsistencies, his aggression towards attacking the basket has diminished since the trade.
Simmons’ scoring average has fallen from 15.9 points on 11.6 field goal attempts per game in Philadelphia to just 6.7 points on 5.4 attempts per game with the Nets.
A healthy training camp could be crucial for Simmons to revive his career. Additionally, the prospect of securing his long-term future is at stake as he approaches the final season of his current contract.
Following the trade of Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks in July, the Nets’ expectations have lowered, which could benefit Simmons unexpectedly.
Under new head coach Jordi Fernández, who previously coached the Sacramento Kings, Simmons may receive more opportunities to handle the ball. Fernández is expected to implement a fast-paced offense that plays to Simmons’ strengths.
The start of Brooklyn’s training camp is set for October 1.
