For the past three years, Bubba Wallace has been honored to drive the signature car of Michael Jordan’s NASCAR team, which proudly displays the number 23.
Since joining Jordan in 2021, Wallace not only secured his first career win at Talladega Superspeedway but also achieved three top 5 and three top 10 finishes in his debut year with Jordan’s 23XI Racing. He has rapidly risen to become one of the most recognized and divisive figures in the sport, making his mark as the highest-finishing Black driver in Daytona 500 history.
Recently, Wallace embraced fatherhood, welcoming his son, Becks Hayden, with his wife Amanda on September 29.
As a first-time dad, Wallace shared that Jordan has been reaching out to ensure he’s managing to get enough sleep.
“He keeps asking if I’m sleeping enough, and surprisingly, we are managing to get some rest. Most nights, Becks sleeps pretty well,” Wallace revealed in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.

This demonstrates a more understanding side of his NBA Hall of Fame boss, who knows how to manage his top talent empathetically. However, it is important to note that working for Jordan also comes with significant verbal challenges.
“He’s competitive,” Wallace remarked about Jordan’s leadership style. “He’s a great source of fun, someone you can exchange jabs with, and he’ll return them, so you need to have thick skin. That’s how I was raised, and trash talk is a big part of the game; he’s arguably one of the best at it.”
Throughout his NBA career, Jordan gained notoriety for being one of the fiercest and most unrestrained trash talkers, not just with his opponents but often with his own teammates as well.
In the acclaimed ESPN docuseries “The Last Dance,” Jordan and his teammates shared anecdotes about his relentless verbal tough love directed at younger players.
Jordan defended his treatment of them in the series, explaining that it was all in pursuit of victory.
“When people see this, they might think, ‘Well, he wasn’t really a nice guy; perhaps he was a tyrant!’ But that’s their perspective because they’ve never achieved anything,” Jordan stated in the docuseries. “I wanted to win, and I wanted them to experience that success too.”
WHY NASCAR STAR BUBBA WALLACE ISN’T MAKING POLITICAL STATEMENTS THIS YEAR AFTER BRASHING TRUMP IN 2020

One of Jordan’s other drivers even mentioned that the NBA icon once told him he was “terrible” at his sport.
Tyler Reddick, a fellow driver for 23XI, mentioned in a Fox Sports interview on “Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour” that Jordan criticized him during the 2023 Daytona 500.
Reddick recounted, “He [Jordan] turned to me and said, ‘Man, you don’t have any room to talk. You’re terrible at speedway racing.’ I was caught off guard. When MJ criticizes your racing skills, it certainly spurs you to enhance your performance.”
Wallace, part of Jordan’s team aiming for success in the fiercely competitive NASCAR environment, has embraced this approach. As a legendary athlete, Jordan has provided both personal and professional guidance to Wallace, and they often draw parallels between their experiences for strategic purposes.
Nevertheless, Wallace questions Jordan’s understanding of NASCAR as a sport.
“I try to compare his experiences in the league to what it’s like here. Then I have to enlighten him about racing knowledge, as he believes he knows a lot, but there’s definitely more to learn in this sport,” Wallace remarked.
So far, this relationship hasn’t ventured much beyond the racetrack. According to Wallace, he hasn’t even played golf with Jordan in the three years since they began collaborating.

“We primarily discuss racing,” noted Wallace regarding his conversations with Jordan.
Wallace mentioned that he hasn’t participated in any wagering activities with the NBA legend.
Jordan is well-known for his gambling tendencies throughout and post his basketball career. There have also been accounts of him betting with teammates on the outcomes of pre-recorded interactive races shown on the jumbotron during Bulls games.
However, Wallace seems unaware of this aspect of his boss’s persona.
What Wallace does appreciate is that Jordan is an excellent person to discuss basketball with. While at the team facility, Jordan’s Charlotte Hornets—whom he owned until August 2023—are given priority for TV coverage.
<p"During his ownership, the Hornets games were always broadcast at the racetrack," Wallace shared.
Jordan acquired the Charlotte-based franchise in 2010 for $275 million and made a significant profit when he sold it for $3 billion to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall. He remains with the team as a minority owner.
However, under his leadership for 13 seasons, the team recorded a 423-600 record, made only three playoff appearances, and failed to win a single series. Notably, during the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, the then-Bobcats achieved a staggering 7-59 record, the worst in NBA history.
Currently, 23XI Racing stands as the most significant sports team owned by Jordan in the U.S., and the pressure is on Wallace to ensure it doesn’t mirror the fate of the Hornets.
