Local Club Rallies Support After Member’s Son diagnosed
The initiative was spearheaded by the club president, who, after learning about Friedreich’s Ataxia from Emmanuel, a club member whose son Timothée has the condition, was moved to action. “It was very significant to me to do a charity tournament for manny years,” the president stated. ”During the Telethon tournament, Emmanuel told us about the disease affecting his son. We decided to mobilize for him!”
Understanding Friedreich’s Ataxia: A Rare Genetic Disorder
Friedreich’s Ataxia is a rare, progressive genetic disease affecting approximately 1,500 people in France. Timothée, a 20-year-old from Avé, was diagnosed after experiencing falls and clumsiness in his youth. His mother, Stéphanie, explained the difficulty in initially diagnosing the condition: “At the hospital, no one knew this disease.” The disorder results from a faulty gene that leads to insufficient production of frataxin,a protein crucial for cell function. This deficiency causes premature cell death, primarily affecting the nervous system and heart.
Hope Through Research: Advancements Offer promise
Currently, there is no cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia, but research is rapidly advancing, fueling hope for future treatments.
