CLEVELAND — For the first time since August 28, Austin Wells returned to the lineup, but this time he was not in the cleanup position.
Prior to Game 4 of the ALCS against the Guardians, Aaron Boone noted that Wells had strayed from his usual swing in recent weeks, prompting him to move Wells down to the eighth spot and have Jazz Chisholm Jr. bat fourth.
In his first at-bat of an 8-6 victory that brought the Yankees to the threshold of their first World Series appearance since 2009, Wells broke out of a slump by hitting his first homer of the postseason.
This hit also ended a troubling 0-for-21 streak that led to Wells being replaced behind the plate by Jose Trevino during Thursday’s Game 3 loss.

“I definitely have not felt like myself over the past month,” Wells remarked. “But [Thursday] night, I made a significant adjustment after the game and recognized some aspects that had contributed to my earlier success.”
Following what he considered the toughest defeat of the season, Wells arrived at Progressive Field early, focusing on adjustments to his swing technique to better engage with the ball, as he felt vulnerable to high pitches.
If batting eighth was necessary, he accepted it.

“It doesn’t matter where I am in the lineup,” Wells stated. “I just want to be in the lineup.”
Heading into Friday’s game, he had managed only 2-for-26 at-bats and hadn’t hit a homer since September 9.
He struck out twice later in the game, including in the top of the ninth inning.
“I feel like he’s missed some pitches and swung through some as well,” Aaron Boone commented before the game. “He’s generally someone who makes contact well and can control the strike zone. However, he has swung and missed at pitches where he typically would have capitalized.”

The turning point came with two outs in the top of the second inning.
After Juan Soto hit a two-run homer in the first inning, giving the Yankees an early lead, the Guardians responded with a run in the bottom half. Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams added to his strikeout tally by fanning both Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe to start the third.
However, Wells launched a four-seam fastball from Williams into the right-center seats.
The 407-foot blast extended the Yankees’ lead to 3-1.
As for where Wells will bat during Saturday’s Game 5, it matters less than his ability to rediscover his swing.
Boone mentioned that Wells “might be just a little worn down” in his rookie season, but he remains confident in his abilities.
“I have a lot of trust in him as a hitter; his inherent qualities as a hitter are impressive,” Boone remarked. “Moving forward, I believe he has the potential to deliver the best at-bats when it matters. He possesses that caliber of talent.”
