The only two drivers to have claimed victory in a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Lancaster Motorplex remarkably finished first and second in Saturday’s Nu-Way Auto Parts 150.
Austin Beers emerged victorious, skillfully navigating a caution-plagued race to gain crucial track position and fend off Patrick Emerling for the win. In addition to defending his 2023 triumph at Lancaster, this victory marks Beers’ first of the 2024 season.
Though relieved to have ended a year-long winless streak, Beers’ thoughts in Victory Lane were with Evan Canfield, a motorsports photographer who sadly passed away earlier that week. He dedicated his win to Canfield.
“This one is for the Canfield family,” Beers stated. “Evan Canfield was an incredible person and we lost him just two days ago. He was truly wonderful, and I always enjoyed seeing him at the racetrack. I’m thrilled to earn another victory after such a tough year.”
Over the past eighteen months on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Beers has developed into one of the series’ most promising young talents.
After completing his sophomore campaign with two wins, Beers has been close to matching his performance from 2023. Alongside securing a pole position at Monadnock Speedway in July, he achieved three consecutive second-place finishes during May and June but had yet to clinch another win despite showing impressive speed.
His return to Victory Lane required patience as cautions marred the Nu-Way Auto Parts 150, creating various opportunities for differing pit strategies; Beers opted to remain on track alongside teammate Matt Hirschman after a caution on Lap 51.
Taking control from Hirschman immediately following the restart was crucial for Beers; however, he needed to make his way onto pit road during the next caution flag. Additional cautions eventually shifted things back in favor of Beers when he inherited first place after Justin Bonsignore and other competitors pitted for tires and adjustments.
During those tense closing laps, Bonsignore posed less of a threat than Emerling; both drivers shared similar strategies as Emerling fervently sought an opportunity for advancement while also battling against Bonsignore after briefly losing position.
Emerling’s perseverance did not result in what would have been his long-awaited first win driving for team owner Rich Gautreau. While having prior success at Lancaster gave him confidence heading into this race, he acknowledged that-behands-off strategy used by Beers allowed him no chance of taking over.
“[Beers] handled it better than I did,” Emerling noted. “There were some small mistakes we could’ve capitalized on—but overall our Fleetworks team executed well today! This was our inaugural outing here as a unit—and finishing second feels respectable since we’ve been close all season.”
The challenge of maintaining lead proved daunting for Beers amid difficult conditions caused by previous rain showers that left perilous spots on track surface—thus necessitating heightened vigilance throughout every lap!
“It got really tricky—especially through turns one & two where there were still some wet areas,” remarked Bieris afterward.“Each time I felt my car loosen up—I’d simply try regain composure there! That’s perhaps why Patrick kept catching right up but honestly—we had such fun racing together!”
