Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith remains unfazed by the mounting scrutiny surrounding his job security, acknowledging that it comes with the territory. Following the team’s third consecutive loss and sixth defeat in eight games, Smith emphasized the importance of focusing on what he can control.
The Falcons (4-6) suffered a setback against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, with quarterback Taylor Heinicke exiting the game in the fourth quarter due to an apparent leg injury. Heinicke was subsequently replaced by Desmond Ridder.
Smith, drawing inspiration from his four years of studying Latin, shared his philosophy on handling external pressures. “Don’t get into professional sports if you’re worried about that. That’s just the truth,” Smith stated. “It’s kind of like the old Latin phrase ‘amor fati’—the love of your fate. You embrace it—the good, the bad, the pressure. That’s what you sign up for.”
Smith, 41, has a record of 18-26 in his two-plus seasons with the Falcons. During the 2021 and 2022 seasons, the team faced significant challenges due to salary cap constraints and the departure of key players like Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. However, this year, the Falcons made notable acquisitions in free agency, including safety Jessie Bates III, defensive linemen David Onyemata and Calais Campbell, and linebackers Bud Dupree and Kaden Elliss. The team also traded for cornerback Jeff Okudah and tight end Jonnu Smith.
All of these additions have played crucial roles in the Falcons’ campaign. Additionally, the team utilized three top-10 draft picks to bolster their skill positions, selecting tight end Kyle Pitts in 2021, receiver Drake London in 2022, and offensive option Bijan Robinson in 2023.
Smith has faced criticism for his handling of some of the team’s young offensive players, particularly Robinson. However, Robinson showcased his potential on Sunday, amassing 95 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
Looking ahead, Smith expressed his intention to evaluate and improve various aspects of the team’s operations during the bye week. One key decision to be made is selecting a starting quarterback between Ridder and Heinicke.
Despite their recent struggles, the Falcons remain in contention within the NFC South division, trailing the division-leading New Orleans Saints (5-5) by just one game. Both Atlanta and New Orleans have a bye this week before their highly anticipated clash on November 26.
“Good news is not dead, and we have a chance to salvage the season or make a significant impact,” Smith affirmed. “Whatever the odds, we can utilize this time to regroup, find solutions, and return with a renewed determination to defeat New Orleans.”
