Having explored the lower half of the Western Conference and how the offseason has reshaped the landscape, it’s time to focus on the top tier among these 15 teams. Here’s Part 2 of our Western Conference power rankings.
Tier 4 — Why are we not guaranteed a playoff spot?
7. Memphis Grizzlies
This team should be in contention for 50 wins again, as they have been in the past. With Ja Morant sidelined for a significant time, Anthony Edwards has climbed the ranks of superstars, and it’s easy to forget how exhilarating Morant is to watch. Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. had the opportunity to expand their offensive roles amid the struggles of last season while Memphis uncovered potential rotation players like Vince Williams Jr. and G.G. Jackson.
And let’s not overlook Marcus Smart, who brings a lot to the table! Then there’s Brandon Clarke! Rookie Zach Edey will step into the starting center position and should be an effective contributor in a limited role of 20-25 minutes each game right away.
However, there are some unresolved issues here.
Jaren Jackson Jr.’s career has been quite peculiar. While he’s undeniably a talented player, he struggles with rebounding and has a tendency to rack up fouls, limiting him to playing the 4 spot, where he has shot just 32.6% from beyond the arc over the past four seasons. Bane’s situation is also uncertain; he possesses All-Star potential as he enters Year 5 after enduring significant injuries over the last two seasons.
Edey may surprise many with his ability to run the floor and defend effectively in his drop coverage zones. His scoring prowess around the rim is as impressive as advertised, and a two-man game with Morant should yield excellent results from the start. It’s important to note that Edey is not Steven Adams, who mastered the little intricacies that make great big men stand out over the years. Transitioning from a seasoned veteran to a rookie could be challenging.
Williams is undoubtedly ready to perform at a playoff-caliber level. G.G. Jackson has been an inspiring story and can truly score, although his all-around game still leaves questions. Memphis is fortunate to have Bane, as other players drafted to complement Morant have been lackluster. Perhaps Jake LaRavia can break that trend in his third season?
Then there’s the Morant saga, a narrative that speaks volumes on its own. However, there is a sense of needing to see results before believing it. A similar sentiment was expressed last year regarding Dallas and Minnesota.
Frequently, coaching can be a decisive factor. Taylor Jenkins has shown great skill and forms solid connections with his players. Because of this, we will give Memphis the benefit of the doubt.
6. Sacramento Kings
Two years ago, the Kings presented a captivating narrative, coming close to upsetting the Golden State Warriors in the first round and reestablishing Sacramento’s basketball presence.
However, last season proved less successful. Their performance dipped slightly, and the lackluster contributions from the supporting cast around their two stars resulted in missing the playoffs.
In response, Sacramento made a significant move by acquiring DeMar DeRozan, arguably the most underrated player of his generation. Unfortunately, DeRozan’s career took a downturn after his trade from Toronto six years ago. In an alternate scenario, he could have achieved seven or eight All-NBA selections instead of just three. He is an exceptional offensive player and now has an opportunity on a competitive team to showcase his talents.
The Kings will benefit immensely from his ability to create scoring opportunities and operate in half-court settings alongside De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Malik Monk. The duo of DeRozan and Fox in critical moments poses a formidable threat.
However, the defensive alignment poses some challenges. Following a peculiar season, Kevin Huerter is likely to move to the bench to allow Keon Ellis, the standout from last season’s role player exploration, to take a more prominent role on defense. This season is crucial for Keegan Murray as he aims to transition from “Hey, he’s not bad!” to being recognized as a genuinely excellent complementary wing player. With Harrison Barnes leaving, Trey Lyles, who has proven dependable, becomes far more essential.
Mike Brown’s task is to maximize the potential of Fox, Monk, and dynamic rookie Devin Carter while allowing DeRozan and Sabonis to shine. If Ellis were a 6-foot-8 player, it would work better, but he is the same size as a point guard, akin to that trio. This team is indeed small. If Brown manages this effectively, Sacramento could reclaim a top-3 offense and solidify its position within the top-six. If not, a return to the play-in tournament awaits.
I’m confident they will make it work and that DeRozan will elevate their performance.
Tier 3 — Trust issues (but I still trust you for some reason)
5. Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have climbed into this tier as they are anticipated to be a very strong team throughout the regular season. None of the other teams provide the same level of confidence in finishing within the top-six.
Mike Budenholzer deserves the accolades for his knack for securing victories, and while the “we still won 49 games” sentiment became a summer meme, it’s easy to envision that total reaching the mid-50s this season. If the Suns perform below average in the fourth quarter, that alone could account for a few losses. With a full season of Royce O’Neale, a healthy start for Bradley Beal, and Tyus Jones’ introduction likely reducing turnovers while improving the offense, the team could positively impact its performance. If Bol Bol or Ryan Dunn can contribute in any meaningful way, the depth of this team could surprise many.
Now, imagine if this team regains its joy for playing basketball! That would be exciting!
The concerns mainly revolve around performance in the postseason, but they do not surpass the issues faced by the next two teams.
With Jones onboard, Phoenix is undersized. In comparison, Denver, Minnesota, and Oklahoma City resemble the MonStars of basketball. Dallas brings its own size challenges, particularly with Luka Doncic standing at 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds. Advancing to the Western Conference Finals will require overcoming one of those four formidable opponents. The Suns face a significant deficiency in…
Defending against elite weapons on any team with weak rebounding is a sure path to becoming a poor defensive squad.
On the offensive front, the Suns must demonstrate their ability to create a synchronized rhythm involving Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant. The addition of Jones and Budenholzer will aid in this effort, but they cannot resolve all the issues on their own. It now falls to these three players, who will need to increase their three-point attempts after neglecting coaching guidance last season. A subtle worry arises from the removal of Grayson Allen from the starting lineup. He was not only a skilled three-point shooter but also an essential team player who exhibited great effort throughout the previous season. With Jones filling Allen’s shoes, facilitating Beal’s involvement will become a tougher task.
4. Denver Nuggets

Disclaimer: I realize it may seem irrational to place these two teams in the same classification. Allow me to clarify!
While some argue that the Nuggets made a mistake by parting ways with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Bruce Brown, others express skepticism about their young players being capable replacements (a sentiment echoed from last season).
However, what stands out is the core group surrounding the league’s finest player, Nikola Jokic.
Jamal Murray is a commendable NBA point guard who emerges as a critical player during the playoffs. Yet, he struggled in the most recent postseason, shooting just 40% and appearing hampered by an ongoing injury. Even two-and-a-half months later, he appeared to be moving poorly at the Olympics with Team Canada, prompting concerns about whether he has lost his explosiveness altogether. This decline in agility and ability to create space is concerning. While it’s not the sole aspect of his game, every guard needs a degree of this capability, even the less agile. Is he still that guy, my friend?
Michael Porter Jr. has shown a significant increase in scoring averages during the second half of his last three full seasons. It seemed a breakout was imminent, with Porter on track to become a 25-point-per-game scorer and the third All-Star of this roster. However, that has yet to materialize, and with Porter now at 26 years old, it raises the question of whether this is the player he will remain, serving as an excellent complementary asset to the stars.
or a talent elite enough to be mentioned in the same breath as Jokic and Murray.
Do you recall having similar thoughts about Aaron Gordon to a lesser extent? He ultimately made his way to Denver, where he embraced a diminished role and transformed into one of the most pivotal role players in the league.
The pressing question is whether any of these three players can elevate their game next season to compensate for the roster’s newfound lack of depth, now that it has become more top-heavy. Jokic has already reached his peak performance. He is, after all, a three-time MVP. Meanwhile, Murray appears to be on a downward trajectory, while Porter and Gordon have understandably stagnated. This was less of a concern when the Nuggets boasted a well-balanced, lethal top rotation, but it has become crucial now.
To clarify, Denver is still poised to win many games. However, the moment a significant injury, particularly to Murray or Porter, arises, the cracks will begin to show. The Nuggets will likely find themselves trailing behind the next three teams as the playoffs approach unless Christian Braun, Julian Strawther, or Peyton Watson steps up to be more than just dependable rotation players. Braun possesses the ability to impact games in various ways, Strawther excels at shooting, and Watson is a strong defender. It will be interesting to watch how this trio performs.
Tier 2 — The third elite team
3. Dallas Mavericks

Building a case for regression is a challenging task. The pairing of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving is sturdier than one might expect. P.J. Washington’s effortless adjustment into a tenacious defender, coupled with his knack for making energetic plays, was one of the most enjoyable surprises of last season. The center rotation featuring Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford is among the best in the league.
Naji Marshall will mitigate the loss of Derrick Jones Jr. thanks to his distinct skill set. He has been quietly effective behind some exceptionally talented wings in New Orleans over the past three seasons, drawing Dallas’s attention. However, he will need to improve his shooting. While Jones was not a high-volume shooter, he managed a 34.3% accuracy on 3.1 attempts per game, whereas Marshall’s career average stands at 31.3% on 2.4 attempts per game, despite coming off a 38.7% shooting rate from beyond the arc. Marshall is a superior connector on the floor and…
That will be quite beneficial.
The key question remains whether Dallas needs a top-tier version of Klay Thompson to succeed in the West. Thompson has the ability to score and shoot in clusters off the bench, reminiscent of his performance towards the end of the regular season when he fully embraced a reserve role. Building on the earlier point about Marshall, Thompson would significantly enhance the decision-making of the players receiving kick-outs from Doncic and Irving. However, his effectiveness as a defender has diminished, and his shot creation capabilities are also limited.
It appears that the Mavericks do not necessarily require all of that. Unlike Phoenix, Dallas will not find itself in a situation where it has no choice but to utilize Thompson in crucial moments, alongside three perimeter players who raise defensive concerns. He is likely to contend for the Sixth Man of the Year award.
Two players to keep an eye on are Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Quentin Grimes. The reliable integration of either into the rotation would provide the Mavericks with sufficient depth to genuinely compete.
Prosper stands at 6 feet 8 inches and weighs 230 pounds, boasting a wingspan of 7 feet 1 inch. He was a first-round pick last year but was not immediately ready for NBA action. If Dallas can effectively blend him with Marshall and Washington on the wing, they would be in a strong position. Last year’s success with Lively took us by surprise; perhaps the Mavericks can replicate that feat.
Grimes was acquired by Dallas from Detroit during a salary dump involving Tim Hardaway Jr., a move that caught many off guard. Two years ago, Grimes performed notably well for the New York Knicks and was a key asset in the Pistons’ deal involving Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks. While there may be factors we’re unaware of concerning Grimes, it’s common for struggling teams to make questionable decisions, raising concerns about Detroit parting ways with a solid defender and capable shooter.
The Mavericks have what it takes to claim the West once again. However, their foundation appears less sturdy than that of the top contenders.
Tier 1 — Complete and Excellent Basketball Teams
2. Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves are remarkably skilled and youthful. Both Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Naz Reid still have room to grow. Additionally, they had a notably strong NBA Draft night.
Speculation had circulated for months regarding the potential value of an unprotected first-round pick in 2031, and the Timberwolves converted it into the No. 8 pick, selecting Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham, a dynamic scorer known for his flair. They also acquired Terrence Shannon Jr. from Illinois in the late first round, who is considered one of the best fits for a contender in the draft and showcased his talent in Vegas. Both players provide significant energy and explosiveness to a second unit that lacked such qualities previously.
However, the scenario is more of a win-now situation than it may seem at first glance.
Mike Conley plays a vital role in the team’s success and is currently 37 years old. We saw him orchestrate parts of the first-round series against Phoenix when Edwards struggled with his half-court decision-making. Rudy Gobert recently turned 32 and is just two years away from unrestricted free agency, similar to Reid. Moreover, valuable reserve guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker is poised to see his salary significantly increase from $4.3 million this season when he signs with a new team next summer.
This team is quickly becoming more expensive and is already on track to pay the second-highest luxury tax bill in the league. And did I mention they are dealing with ownership issues?
This isn’t to suggest that Minnesota is about to initiate a major trade, but the clock is ticking, and the awareness of this can sometimes pressure teams. It’s an important aspect to note. The focus remains on those two rookies since the rest of the roster is quite solid. If Dillingham and Shannon can contribute right away, the Timberwolves will be formidable contenders for 60-plus wins. The team has faith that Dillingham will deliver, and they feel equally confident that Shannon will do the same. If they falter, then the addition of 37-year-old Joe Ingles might become increasingly significant.
1. Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder stand out as the most complete team in the NBA.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the way as a definitive star, reminiscent of how Ken Griffey Jr. made athleticism look effortless and cool. Both Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren surpassed expectations last season and are poised to make multiple All-Star appearances. Arguably, the league’s top trio of perimeter defenders comprises Alex Caruso, Luguentz Dort, and Cason Wallace. All six players excel in shooting, not to mention the team’s sharpshooter, Isaiah Joe.
In a notable move, the Thunder made a significant financial investment in Isaiah Hartenstein, filling their sole need for size. A rugged and dependable player around the basket during his time in New York, Hartenstein arrived in the league as a versatile big man known for his playmaking abilities. His passing skills may surprise observers, and it wouldn’t be shocking if he starts knocking down three-pointers, too.
Hartenstein and Holmgren form the best rim-protecting duo in the league, backed by the previously mentioned versatile perimeter defense. This team’s defensive capabilities are set to be formidable—truly a force to be reckoned with.
Aaron Wiggins and Kenrich Williams effectively complete the wing depth. Don’t overlook Jaylin Williams, either, as he provides an excellent option as a third big man. All three can make three-pointers as well. Although opponents might leave some of the Thunder’s shooters, particularly Dort and Wiggins, open, the team boasts a solid rotation of 11 players, with Hartenstein being the only potential inefficiency—for now.
The primary challenge facing OKC is the young players adjusting to playoff intensity. In the second round, there were moments where it was on Gilgeous-Alexander to seize the game in the second half, with mixed results. Jalen Williams performed adequately but didn’t stand out, and the same goes for Holmgren.
This season might be a year too early for them. However, that’s also how it felt when predicting a top-five finish last season when they were nearly champions of the West. The Boston Celtics have demonstrated how a five-out style of play is reshaping the game, making versatile rosters like Oklahoma City’s increasingly common. The Thunder have been ahead of the curve for years, and it’s finally beginning to pay off.
