Assessing the Detroit Lions’ Interior Offensive Line Depth: Concerns Arise Amid Training Camp Injuries

Throughout the first two weeks of training‍ camp, the Detroit Lions have maintained⁢ a relatively healthy roster. On nearly every day of camp so far, at least 85 ‍out of 90 players have⁤ participated in practice. However, ⁣this doesn’t mean they haven’t⁤ encountered injuries. They faced a significant loss with veteran kicker Michael Badgley⁣ sidelined for⁤ the season,⁤ defensive tackle DJ Reader is on the Physically Unable to‌ Perform list, John Cominsky is out for five months, and there are⁤ ongoing issues within the‌ interior offensive line‍ as well.

The‍ Lions also saw Netane Muti’s season end due to ⁢a shoulder injury. Rookie Christian Mahogany still remains listed under Non-Football Illness,‌ and veteran ‌Kayode Awosika has missed the last two practices for reasons that have not been ⁤disclosed.

In response to these challenges, the Lions‌ have made some adjustments to their ⁣lineup. Notably, after⁣ moving him back to primarily play tackle, Colby Sorsdal ⁣has begun seeing snaps‍ again at guard—while continuing to incorporate some time at tackle as⁣ well. Additionally, they signed veterans Ike ⁢Boettger (who has ‌17 career starts) and Jake Burton (who comes with⁣ three years of experience in⁢ USFL/UFL).

This leads us to today’s Question ‌of the‌ Day:

Is there ‍an issue with the Lions’ interior⁢ offensive line?

My ‌response: It may be premature to draw conclusions yet; however,‌ it should certainly raise some minor concerns.

At the outset of training camp, things‍ appeared ‌stable for ‍this⁤ position group. Awosika and Muti were vying for a veteran ‍reserve spot while Mahogany was viewed as a promising developmental‍ player. ⁣Furthermore, if anything were to happen with Frank Ragnow’s ‍health‌ during ⁤games this season, Graham Glasgow was ‌ready as an alternative option.

That said it’s still⁢ too early regarding both Awosika and Mahogany’s status; currently‍ we lack clear information about Awosika’s condition—which is somewhat reassuring⁢ given‍ he hasn’t been ⁢placed on IR—and⁢ Mahogany’s illness continues shrouded ⁤in‍ mystery despite ‌Coach Dan Campbell providing⁤ only general comments about it.

Nonetheless, ⁢it’s worth highlighting that if Detroit heads into ⁣the upcoming season relying solely on their current interior offensive ⁤line depth chart without any changes or improvements ‍made soon; they could‌ indeed face significant challenges. Below is a list of depth ‍players ⁢who appear ⁣healthy at this time:

  • Colby Sorsdal ‌(3 NFL ⁣starts)
  • Ike Boettger (17 starts)
  • Kingsley ‍Eguakun (undrafted rookie)
  • Bryan Hudson (undrafted rookie)
  • Duke Clemens‌ (undrafted rookie)
  • Jake‍ Burton (no NFL ⁢experience)
  • Michael Niese (0 starts; undrafted in 2023)

(This isn’t implying that major mistakes exist on Detroit’s ‌roster or indicating glaring holes.) The team appears ⁤merely unfortunate⁤ early this season concerning player availability and should one starter go down unexpectedly—they may need an ⁤untested player stepping ⁤up exponentially ⁤more ‍than desired onto field duties immediately after being⁣ called ⁢upon.

Hopefully⁢ once cleared from illness/injury return-,Mahoganny/Aw{suka} will rejoin)+🎈good luck ••
