In a tense Champions League match, Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, but not without some challenges as Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury and Leandro Trossard failed to convert a penalty.
Arsenal, still missing the injured Bukayo Saka following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, took the lead when Gabriel Martinelli’s shot hit the post and was deflected in by Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.
However, without their key players, including Martin Odegaard, the Gunners struggled to find their rhythm. Their injury concerns worsened when Calafiori injured his knee during the second half, raising doubts about his availability for Sunday’s match against Liverpool, from which William Saliba will be absent due to suspension.
Calafiori went down immediately after the incident. After a brief attempt to continue playing despite receiving treatment, he was substituted by young prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back.
“He had to come off because he felt something,” Mikel Arteta stated in the post-match press conference. “I’m unsure about the extent of the injury. So, it’s not great news in that regard.”

Sky Sports’ Paul Gilmour and Nick Wright react to Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, during which Riccardo Calafiori was substituted off due to injury.
Arsenal had an opportunity to seal the match when Mykola Matviyenko was called for handball in the Shakhtar penalty area after a VAR review. However, Trossard’s penalty kick struck the legs of Riznyk.
This missed penalty created a tense finish for the home team, who, despite being in control, required an impressive one-handed save from David Raya to deny Shakhtar substitute Pedrinho’s long-range attempt for an equalizer.

This victory propels Arsenal to seven points from their initial three Champions League matches, positioning them among the top eight teams in the league phase. However, with Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu already unavailable, Calafiori’s recent injury could pose a significant defensive challenge for Arteta ahead of Sunday’s match, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, against the leaders of the Premier League.
Arteta: We appeared fatigued… but will be prepared for Liverpool
In a recent press conference, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta stated:
“The match comprised two distinctly different halves. In the first half, we were in control and created four significant opportunities. Given our dominance and possession, we should have secured the victory.
“We seemed fatigued. Our sharpness, both on and off the ball, was lacking; we struggled to regain possession at critical moments and lost the ball in key situations that allowed for transitions. We had more chances but also missed a penalty.
“That emotional setback was tough to overcome, so we had to dig in.”
“We played two nights ago with players returning from international matches after traveling from Brazil and other countries, so I anticipated a slight decline in performance.
“Considering how much effort we exerted in the first half without achieving a significant scoreline, I believe we did suffer a bit for that.
“We complicated things for ourselves by starting to give the ball away in inappropriate areas, leading to a more open game. That certainly did not help. However, we now have four days. Trust me, come Sunday, we’ll be in great shape.
“We’ll conduct a review, take a day off, and then have two days to prepare for the match. Sunday is still some time away, and we feel confident that we will be in the right position.”
