The preseason for the Lakers was packed with excitement, featuring numerous road trips, the rise of fan favorite Quincy Olivari, and some clarity regarding JJ Redick.
We also received plenty of questions from you all. Let’s explore our preseason mailbag!
We’ll have a more detailed article on this on Monday. However, if I had to pick one standout, it would undoubtedly be Dalton Knecht.
Although he came in with some expectations and enthusiasm, he quickly established himself as a legitimate NBA player who will require playing time before long.
Conversely, D’Angelo Russell didn’t exactly set the world ablaze, despite his own assessments. I have little concern for him; as a veteran familiar with preseason dynamics, I trust he can smoothly transition into the season.
Nevertheless, he approached training camp with excitement regarding what he could achieve under JJ Redick’s guidance. Unfortunately, he shot only 36.5% from the field and 24% from beyond the arc. A strong start would greatly benefit him in the coming week.
The answer to this is undoubtedly Austin Reaves, as he has already proven to be that player. Since starting in Memphis during the playoffs and continuing into last season’s games, LeBron James and Anthony Davis have relied on Reaves during crucial moments.
I believe this holds true even more because Russell’s game impact fluctuates significantly depending on whether his shot is falling. Reaves can still make an impact even if his shooting isn’t on point.
However, if we’re discussing who is the most reliable shot-maker in clutch situations, it’s unequivocally Reaves for me. Don’t be shocked if Max Christie enters the discussion as well; I could see him closing out several games this year due to his defensive skills.
This is in response to LeBron’s recent comments — as well as those during and after the Olympics — about playing alongside Steph Curry.
I don’t see these two ideas as mutually exclusive. Competing against someone year after year for an NBA championship means you won’t be overly friendly about it; they represent a challenge you must overcome.
However, once those years of competition are behind you and you look back, you can appreciate what transpired and how special it was, especially when reflecting on two generation-defining players.
They’ve entered a new phase in their careers, having accomplished much, won titles without facing each other since their Finals encounters, and can now reminisce from a different viewpoint.
To clarify regarding the eight names mentioned, LeBron and Rui are going to consistently log minutes. This likely translates to around 25-30 minutes for Rui and 30-35 for LeBron. However, a significant portion of their playing time will occur at the four, so the situation isn’t entirely straightforward.
Vincent, being a point guard, isn’t part of this discussion. Maxwell Lewis is still a long way from contributing meaningful minutes. Thus, we are left with Austin Reaves, Cam Reddish, Dalton Knecht, and Max Christie.
Currently, Reddish is the odd one out. There’s no justification to play him over the younger talent. Reaves is the starter, Christie serves as the backup, and until Jarred Vanderbilt returns, Knecht will take the remaining minutes at the 2-3.
The leftover minutes at the two and three should be shared among Reaves, Christie, and Knecht. D’Angelo Russell and Vincent will handle the point guard duties.
I recognize this question was posed before the recent report over the weekend. I would also like to clarify that the Lakers signed Christian Koloko with full awareness that it would take some time for him to be cleared. They entered into this decision with eyes wide open and are not surprised by the unfolding situation.
