The Anaheim Ducks have joined the ranks of NHL teams transitioning their local game broadcasts from regional sports networks to a blend of direct-to-consumer streaming and local TV broadcasts.
On Tuesday, the Ducks revealed that 65 games for the upcoming season will air on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Additionally, they have entered a multiyear partnership with A Parent Media Co. Inc. to offer all games for free on a regional basis via the Victory+ streaming service.
The team’s contract with Diamond Sports Group concluded at the end of the 2023-24 season, after which games aired on Bally Sports West.
“The Ducks have already established themselves as a significant content provider, and our team president possesses a strong broadcasting background,” stated Jason Walsh, the COO of A Parent Media.
This offseason, the Ducks are the third team to announce a broadcast model change. The Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers will shift their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars are also set to provide regional game streaming through Victory+.
“We are thrilled to share that fans across our entire television market will have access to locally broadcast games at no cost, whether through streaming or traditional television (cable or over-the-air),” said Ducks president Aaron Teats in a statement. “Connecting Ducks fans with the whole market is a crucial priority for our organization, and we want every fan in our region to have the chance to watch Ducks games for free on multiple accessible platforms.”
The over-the-air broadcasts will be available on Fox 11 Plus (KCOP Channel 13).
Details regarding the announcers for these broadcasts have yet to be announced, but the team is expected to maintain its current lineup. Since the franchise’s inception in 1993, Brian Hayward has served as the analyst, with John Ahlers taking on play-by-play duties for 22 seasons.
The Victory+ streaming app is scheduled for release in September, compatible with smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones. This service will allow Ducks fans in the regional areas of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, along with Hawaii, to watch the games. It’s designed as a free, ad-supported streaming platform.
Diamond Sports Group, which operates the Bally networks, has been undergoing bankruptcy proceedings in Texas since last March. According to recent filings, Diamond will carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season, including the Los Angeles Kings.
In Southern California, Diamond also holds agreements with Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels and the NBA’s LA Clippers.
