CLEVELAND — It’s been quite a week in the American League Central.
This division, which had become a source of mockery in recent years, has now established itself as potentially the most captivating and competitive segment in MLB. With four teams contending for a postseason spot and another in Chicago facing historical challenges, the AL Central will undoubtedly capture attention in the final week of the regular season and possibly beyond.
This penultimate week of the regular season featured two crucial series, with Minnesota visiting Cleveland for four games and the surging Tigers playing three against Kansas City. As the only remaining divisional series involves the White Sox facing Detroit in the final weekend, this was a critical opportunity for these four October contenders to improve their standings directly at the expense of their opponents.
The Tigers’ remarkable second-half resurgence, after having sold off players at the trade deadline, has left many in the baseball community puzzled. Even after a spirited series win against the struggling Orioles, Detroit’s matchup at Kauffman Stadium — where the Royals had one of the best home records in baseball — appeared daunting. However, the Tigers continued their impressive form. After allowing a grand slam to Bobby Witt Jr. in the third inning of the series opener, Detroit’s largely unheralded pitching staff limited the Royals to just five runs over the next 25 innings, pulling off an unexpected sweep at a crucial moment.
According to FanGraphs, the Tigers’ playoff odds, which barely exceeded 2% throughout much of August, have skyrocketed recently, giving them a chance to end the longest postseason drought in baseball, currently shared with the Angels. The last time Detroit had three starting pitchers in a postseason series was when Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and David Price took the mound. In short, it’s been quite some time.

In Cleveland, the Guardians aimed to prevent a repeat of the past three weeks, when Kansas City visited and took three out of four games. During that series, the Guardians briefly lost their sole ownership of first place for the first time since mid-April. However, they have since rebounded remarkably and started this week’s series with a significantly better trajectory than their rivals.
Their opponents were feeling the pressure. Just a month ago, the Twins held a nine-game lead over the Tigers, a lead that has now vanished as Minnesota has gone through its worst stretch of the season, coinciding with Detroit’s best run. This week’s series in Cleveland proved disastrous for the Twins, as the Guardians showcased their strength by executing three thrilling comebacks, bringing their total to 42 comeback victories this season — more than any other team in MLB. On Thursday, Andres Gimenez’s walk-off hit in the 10th inning guaranteed the Guardians a postseason berth, while Minnesota, which stood 17 games over .500 as recently as August 17, fell to 80-73, now tied with Detroit with only nine games remaining.
After Monday’s thrilling win, Guardians’ rookie manager Stephen Vogt drew attention with his visibly emotional reaction to a question about Kyle Manzardo’s go-ahead home run in the eighth inning. This was just one of several impactful swings from the rookie, who has been a much-needed asset to Cleveland’s offense following the injury of leadoff hitter Steven Kwan, who was placed on the IL due to a back issue.
Vogt expressed that what moved him most wasn’t just Manzardo’s homer but the overwhelming joy of his teammates, particularly Josh Naylor, who was on base at the time of the home run. “I love these guys,” Vogt said, with evident emotion. “They are such a joy to watch. Their chemistry is remarkable. They work hard. It was a night full of emotions. Seeing teammates bond that way is powerful.”
While the emotional moments may have been a new addition, such feelings have become a common theme in Vogt’s press conferences this season. He has consistently praised the unity displayed by his team, which has led to impressive results and exceeded external expectations, with a winning culture fostered by players of all experience levels.
Beyond the players, Vogt is quick to highlight the contributions of his coaching staff, who play a crucial role in maximizing Cleveland’s potential. Taking over after future Hall of Fame manager Francona was no easy task for Vogt in his first managerial season, and he attributes much of his success to the support from his coaches. This diverse group includes bench coach Craig Albernaz, who joined the organization at the same time as Vogt, and franchise stalwarts like first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. and pitching coach Carl Willis, alongside local figures like bullpen coach Brad Goldberg, who has been instrumental in preparing and enhancing the performance of one of baseball’s top relief units.
“This staff puts in an incredible amount of effort. They prepare thoroughly for every game. By the time we leave, we are all drained from dedicating every ounce of our energy to our players, which is our responsibility,” he stated. “Then, we recharge and do it all over again the following day.
“… Each of them has more coaching experience than I do, and I rely heavily on them throughout the game.”
“It’s been a fantastic experience throughout the day. Doing this alongside Craig Albernaz has made it even more special,” Vogt expressed, recalling his connection with Albernaz from their days as minor leaguers in the Rays organization between 2007 and 2012. “It’s truly a dream come true.”
Having spent a decade in the major leagues and earning several All-Star selections, Vogt’s declaration about this season carries significant weight: “This has been the most enjoyable year of my career.”
While Vogt enjoys his “dream” season, a far more challenging managerial task has arisen for Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, who is working to prevent Minnesota from squandering what once seemed like another certain postseason berth.
Five years ago, Baldelli led the Twins to the AL Central title during his inaugural season as manager. Last year, Minnesota celebrated its third division title in five years under Baldelli, sailing to the top of a historically weak division. However, this year has presented greater difficulties, not only due to the resurgence of three AL Central competitors but also due to two internal roster issues that Baldelli has had to navigate.
The first challenge is all too familiar: the frequent injuries to the Twins’ top two players. Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton both landed on the IL in mid-August, with Buxton grappling with right hip inflammation and Correa struggling with plantar fasciitis, this time in his right foot after managing a similar injury in his left foot for most of the previous season. Their impressive performances during the early part of the season made it evident that the team started to decline as their lengthy absences began.
“It hasn’t disappeared. It’s still present. It won’t go away,” Derek Falvey, the Twins’ president of baseball operations, said regarding Correa’s condition to Yahoo Sports. Buxton made a brief return after playing two Triple-A games, but Correa elected to skip a rehab assignment, immediately rejoining the Twins’ lineup after two months off, a choice that Falvey takes seriously.
“We’ll ease him back in as cautiously as possible,” Falvey noted. “But he wanted to play, and we supported that decision. At this stage of the season, he understands how to manage this and cope with it. I’m hopeful that he can build back up, as he is a key element for us in the final stretch.”
Striking a balance between gradually reintegrating these players while needing maximum production poses a significant daily challenge for Baldelli and his staff. The tight competition in the current race makes every game that either Correa or Buxton misses feel like a lost chance to field the best team, especially given the inconsistency of the remaining roster during their absences.
A prominent illustration of that inconsistency has been Royce Lewis’ recent performance. Lewis, a highly skilled player who has also struggled with injuries, managed to stay healthy for an extended period; however, he is currently facing one of the toughest stretches of his professional career just when the Twins desperately need his star quality to shine, as it did earlier this season and last year during the playoff push. Lewis’ ongoing struggles — with a batting line of .216/.254/.293 over his past 33 games — increase the pressure on Correa and Buxton to deliver immediate results upon their return from injury.
The second factor complicating Minnesota’s situation has been the unique circumstance of relying on three rookie starting pitchers in their rotation in the middle of a playoff chase. Veterans Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober have both been solid throughout the year and especially impressive over the past month, but injuries to Joe Ryan, Chris Paddack, and Anthony DeSclafani have forced the team to depend heavily on a trio of 24-year-old right-handers: Simeon Woods Richardson, David Festa, and Zebby Matthews, all of whom have set career highs in innings pitched this season.
Even though Matthews and Woods Richardson delivered nearly identical strong performances on Wednesday and Thursday, the fact that neither pitcher lasted five innings highlighted how much Minnesota has been relying on its bullpen on days when Lopez and Ober don’t take the mound. The Twins’ relief crew is indeed talented but has been stretched thin in recent weeks, paying the price, as was evident this week in Cleveland.
If they manage to somehow squeak into October,
It will be intriguing to observe which of the three Twins rookies rises as the top contender to start a postseason game. At the very least, it’s a reasonable assumption that Rocco Baldelli and his staff will be devising innovative strategies to utilize their pitching staff in the upcoming weeks.
Nevertheless, the Twins are not finished just yet. Despite some rough patches, there remains a pathway for Minnesota to fend off the Tigers and set up a rematch with a Houston team that eliminated them in last year’s ALDS. Minnesota will be heading to Boston for three games against a Red Sox team that has also faced significant struggles in September, yet is only four games behind the Twins in the wild-card race. If the Twins manage to thwart Boston’s last attempt this weekend, it will be crucial for Minnesota to handle business next week against the struggling Marlins, before concluding with three games against a Baltimore team that might not have much left to compete for by that time.
Currently, Baltimore has a slim chance of catching the Yankees at the top of the AL East, but the Tigers are set to visit Camden Yards this weekend, with an opportunity to shake up the AL wild-card standings. After that, Detroit will head home to play against Tampa Bay and the White Sox, which may provide the Tigers a prime chance to pull ahead of Minnesota as the regular season approaches its end.
The Royals remain in a good position to secure the second AL wild-card spot and will aim to recover from their disappointing performance against Detroit as they host the recently eliminated Giants at Kauffman Stadium for three games. A particularly appealing interleague matchup in Atlanta awaits during the final weekend, a series that could significantly impact the playoff positioning for both teams involved.
Cleveland could clinch the AL Central as soon as Saturday in St. Louis, but the real goal is to secure the top seed overall in the AL bracket. As the team with the best home record in the American League (48-28), obtaining home-field advantage throughout the postseason could be enormously beneficial for Cleveland, and it is very much within reach, as the Guardians are just a half-game behind the Yankees as they head into play on Friday.
Regardless of how things unfold from here, these four AL Central teams are guaranteed to provide us with plenty more to discuss. It’s hard to believe we were saying something different just a year ago!
