Afghan Club Dissolves Following Alleged Match-Fixing Scandal
Attack Energy Cultural Sports Club, a historic Afghan football team, has announced its dissolution in the wake of alleged match-fixing in the Afghan Football Champions League.
Eight clubs, including Attack Energy, lodged formal complaints to the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) alleging Abu Muslim, another team, benefitted from manipulated outcomes in the recently concluded league season.Attack Energy alleged, in an open statement, a lack of responsiveness from football authorities, accusing the AFF leadership of ignoring clear discrepancies. Notably, the Afghan Football Federation initially stood by its decisions, affirming Abu Muslim’s victory.
International pressure mounted with officials from Attack Energy reaching out to FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, and AFC, the Asian governing body.
Despite reaching international bodies, Attack Energy maintains that these alleged manipulations negatively impacted the integrity and fairness of Afghan football, leaving them ultimately without recourse but dissolution. The team expressed deep disappointment that officials failed to take appropriate measures against alleged irregularities.
FIFA has acknowledged receiving information regarding accusations within domestic football. Though, it emphasized they primarily focus investigations into allegations originating outside domestic leagues, leaving questions lingering about international football’s intervention in local instances of corruption.
