Pelicans Stage Historic Comeback to Top Jazz
The New Orleans Pelicans completed the largest comeback in franchise history Monday night, erasing a 25-point deficit to defeat the Utah jazz 123-119 in overtime.
CJ McCollum led the charge for New Orleans, scoring a game-high 45 points, including key 3-pointers adn clutch reverse layups. Dejounte Murray nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with 26 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.
Despite a rash of injuries that has plagued the Pelicans this season, the team displayed remarkable resilience, securing their fourth straight win and seventh in their last 10 games.
Overcoming adversity
New Orleans has been without star forward Zion Williamson for much of the season due to a hamstring injury and illness, and key contributors Brandon Ingram (ankle) and Herb Jones (shoulder) also remain sidelined. The pelicans were further hampered against Utah by the absence of rookie center Yves Missi, who was out sick.
Despite being outrebounded 63-45 and losing the battle in the paint 60-40, New Orleans persevered. McCollum credited his teammates for finding him open shots and executing the game plan.
McCollum’s Veteran Leadership
The 33-year-old McCollum, now in his 12th NBA season, showcased his veteran savvy, scoring 45 or more points twice in his last 10 games.
“I ain’t out here dunking on people,” McCollum said. “It’s skill. It’s strategy. It’s angles. It’s footwork. it’s a jump shot that never leaves. I’ll be able to shoot when I’m 40.”
mccollum stressed the importance of appreciating the wins, especially considering the challenges the Pelicans have faced this season.
Supporting Cast Steps Up
Trey Murphy III continued his impressive run with 24 points, including a crucial 3-pointer late in overtime. Jordan Hawkins, the Pelicans’ first-round draft pick in 2023, contributed 18 points, sinking three 3-pointers.
The Pelicans will look to build on this momentum when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.
