Osvaldo “Ozzie” Virgil Sr., who was the inaugural Dominican player to compete in Major League Baseball, has passed away at the age of 92.
Throughout his nine seasons in the Major Leagues, Virgil donned the uniforms of five different teams, starting with the New York Giants in 1956. His career continued with stints at the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Notably, he also played for the Giants during their relocation to San Francisco in the 1966 and 1969 seasons.

On September 29, 2024, the baseball community mourns the loss of Ozzie Virgil Sr., a former player for the Giants.
Throughout his career, Virgil recorded a batting average of .231 along with a .594 OPS, hitting 14 home runs and earning 73 RBIs over the course of 324 games. His most notable season came in 1957, during which he posted a .235 batting average, a .583 OPS, two triples, four home runs, 24 RBIs, and two stolen bases.
Primarily a third baseman, having played 189 games with 114 starts in that position, Virgil also took on roles as a catcher, outfielder, and made several appearances at various other infield positions. He played every position on the field except for center field and pitcher.
Virgil was born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. At the age of 13, he and his family moved to the United States, settling in the Bronx. After completing high school, he spent three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, then embarked on a professional baseball career following his military service.

“I knew I would constitute the first player from my small country to break into the best baseball league in the world,” Virgil shared with ESPNDeportes’ Enrique Rojas in 2006, commemorating the 50th anniversary of his major league debut. “However, I never anticipated that over time, it would become something commonplace.”
In his initial game, Virgil went 0-for-4 at the plate; nonetheless, he remarked that he felt as though he’d accomplished a “4-for-4” performance, given the significance of what he had fulfilled.
“Virgil’s impact on my country should be as significant as [Jackie] Robinson’s is to the African-American community,” stated Hall of Famer David Ortiz.
David Ortiz shared his thoughts on Rojas, stating, “I would rank his legacy alongside the founders of our republic. If baseball weren’t my path, I would likely be working in my home country. I express my gratitude daily for him opening the doors to the big leagues for me.”
Virgil made history by being the first native of the Dominican Republic to compete in Major League Baseball and also the first person of color to represent the Detroit Tigers, having been traded to the team in 1958 to commence a three-season tenure. He achieved a remarkable 5-for-5 performance in his initial game with Detroit.

Following the conclusion of his playing days, Virgil spent 19 years coaching in the majors with teams such as the Giants, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners. He served as the third base coach under Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams during his time with Montreal, San Diego, and Seattle.
