Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) – On Friday, Jiri Kulich and the majority of the Buffalo Sabres delivered an impressive performance at the Sabres Prospects Challenge, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of 3-1.
While the score may not reflect total domination, it’s worth noting that I selected Blue Jackets goaltender Nolan Lalonde as the game’s first star. Had Lalonde not played exceptional hockey, the tally might have reached double digits.
In the first period, the Sabres outshot the Jackets 16-4, and in the second period, it was 19-9. Lalonde concluded the night with an impressive 38 saves out of 41 shots.
Both Kulich and Isak Rosen were expected to shine, with Kulich delivering on that promise—unlike Rosen, who fell short.
Kulich’s goal in the third period was certainly highlight-worthy, likely to make it to SportsCenter, and could even draw attention in Canada.
The 2022 first-round pick showcased his skills by skillfully maneuvering past defenseman Charlie Elick, a second-round selection in this year’s NHL Draft, before deking Lalonde out of position to score his second goal and notch his third point of the game.

Kulich initiated the scoring after Vsevolod Komarov’s shot deflected off Rosen right to Kulich, who made no mistake with the opportunity.
Komarov continued his impressive performance from last season when he was honored as the QMJHL’s best defenseman. He showcased his strength at both ends of the ice and was unafraid to step up and play physically, ensuring puck retention.

Olivier Nadeau excelled on the forecheck, resulting in a power play goal. The play highlighted speed as Kulich entered the zone swiftly. Victor Neuchev used his pace on the right wing to deliver a perfect pass to a waiting Nadeau. Nadeau consistently emerged victorious in wall battles, ensuring the puck remained in the offensive zone whenever he was on the ice.
I named Noah Ostlund as the game’s third star. Although he did not register a point, the puck was often on his stick. While not particularly large, his ability to win numerous board battles was impressive. He created several turnovers that generated significant scoring opportunities for Konsta Helenius and Anton Wahlberg. After a slick pass from Komarov, Helenius found himself with an open net but unfortunately sent the puck through the crease instead of scoring. Ostlund also had multiple chances for one-timers from the right circle, but Lalonde stood tall in goal.
Even the two lesser-known defensemen, Noah Laaouan and Jack Bodin, performed admirably throughout the matchup.
Although Scott Ratzlaff only faced 20 shots over the course of the game, Buffalo faltered on four occasions, requiring Ratzlaff to make key saves from close range.
I could continue highlighting exceptional performances, but it is clear that the Sabres adhered closely to their game plan. Rochester Americans coach Mike Leone remarked,
“The
We discussed over the last three days the importance of playing hard, smart, and fast, along with the commitment to adopting a strong game identity, irrespective of the outcome. From the beginning of the game, we tracked well and I felt we demonstrated great speed and possession of the puck. I particularly appreciated how we managed the final two minutes; we did it well, and their goalie couldn’t be pulled. It was a solid team effort overall.
Leone has decided not to hold a morning skate on Saturday, as the Sabres are set to face the New Jersey Devils. The Devils triumphed over the Ottawa Senators on Friday, winning 9-1. I suspect that Ryerson Leenders, the Sabres’ seventh-round pick from this past June, will be starting in goal.
Last season, Leenders compiled a record of 24-17-4 with the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads, posting a goals-against average of 3.12 and a save percentage of .909.
The game on Saturday at Harborcenter is officially sold out.
