BYRON, MI – Regardless of the weather, residents from the quaint village of Byron are gearing up to send off their NASCAR driver on Sunday, Aug. 18, just before his significant race.
With a population of 545, Byron is the hometown of NASCAR driver Erik Jones. Although he primarily resides in North Carolina throughout the year, where his racing team is based, Jones returns to his hometown for the week leading up to his race at Michigan International Speedway every year.
For the third consecutive year, enthusiastic fans will fill the streets to wish him well on Sunday morning as he departs for the track.
“A lady in town initiated this a few years back, and it’s pretty special,” Jones shared. “It’s really neat.”
The Burns Township Fire Department will close off South Saginaw Street for the event, allowing Jones to drive through and greet fans. This year’s sendoff festivities will commence around 7:30 a.m. Attendees can park at the post office located at 203 S. Saginaw St. in Byron, which is roughly 25 miles southwest of Flint.
An exciting addition this year is that Jones’ team will distribute goody bags filled with items from Dollar Tree/Family Dollar, as that’s his sponsor for the FireKeepers Casino 400.
Last year’s sendoff was particularly memorable because Jones had recently married in Michigan a few days prior. Fans displayed signs that read both “Congratulations” and “Good luck,” while they braved the rain to show their support.
“It really uplifts you and provides that extra motivation to go down there and achieve something,” Jones noted.
Jones, competing in car No. 43 Toyota, is one of three Michigan drivers participating in Sunday’s Cup Series race, alongside Rochester Hills’ Brad Keselowski in car No. 6 Ford and rookie Carson Hocevar from Portage in car No. 77 Chevrolet. They are all striving to be the first Michigan-born driver to win a Cup race at MIS.
The sendoff is just one highlight of race day at MIS for Jones. There will also be the “Erik Jones Experience,” an add-on opportunity for ticket purchasers. It is available for $15 to add to an existing ticket, and includes access to a Sunday morning tailgate featuring a DJ, games, and appearances by Jones and his team owner, Richard Petty, a seven-time NASCAR champion.
For every ticket sold, $5 will be contributed to the Erik Jones Foundation.
The tailgate is expected to be a blend of Jones’ friends, family, and fans from Byron, along with others who have come to meet him.
“It’s enjoyable to reconnect with familiar faces while also getting to meet new people,” Jones expressed.
The FireKeepers Casino 400 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast on the USA Network.
