Welcome to Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season.
The Kansas City Chiefs remain the sole undefeated team, while the Minnesota Vikings suffered their first loss of the season against the Detroit Lions in Week 7. The New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns all dropped to 1-6 following their defeats. In contrast, the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles both celebrated significant victories.
We have refreshed the rankings and instructed NFL Nation reporters to identify a young player on the rise for each team. A “young riser” is defined as a player under 25 years old who hasn’t yet proven himself as a top player but is gaining recognition this season. Here are 32 players who are making strides as the season progresses through seven weeks.

Young riser: DB Chamarri Conner
At 24 years old, Conner has distinguished himself in multiple roles as a slot corner, safety, and linebacker. During a thrilling fourth-quarter against the Bengals, Conner scooped up a fumble and raced it back for a touchdown, giving the Chiefs the lead. He later sacked quarterback Joe Burrow on a critical third down, concluding Cincinnati’s final possession and handing the ball back to Kansas City for the game-winning field goal drive. — Adam Teicher

Young riser: S Brian Branch
In his rookie season in 2023, Branch showcased his skills with three interceptions while primarily playing as a nickel cornerback. However, this year, the Lions’ coaching staff has opted to move the 23-year-old to safety, allowing him greater freedom within their system. Branch has emerged as an early breakout star for the defense this season, recording four interceptions and 11 passes defended in just five games. Following the Lions’ win on Sunday, Branch remarked that defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was placing him in “positions to make plays.” — Eric Woodyard

Young riser: CB Christian Benford
From training camp onward, Benford has consistently demonstrated his potential to be a strong, long-term starter. This season, he has allowed just 3.7 yards per target as the closest defender, which is tied for the third fewest among players with at least 20 targets, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Among cornerbacks logging 200 or more coverage snaps, the 24-year-old Benford has posted the second-lowest completion percentage allowed when nearest to the receiver, at 51.6%. Fellow starting outside corner Rasul Douglas commented, “[Benford] knows what it takes, he works hard every day… and I mean extremely hard. He studies. Young riser: OT Roger Rosengarten
This year’s draft led Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta to select Rosengarten, 22, in the second round, and his early impact is clear. He is the first second-round pick to start so soon for Baltimore since Kelechi Osemele, an offensive lineman, back in 2012. Following Rosengarten’s promotion to starting right tackle in Week 3, the Ravens’ offensive line gained momentum, contributing to Baltimore ranking among the top five in total offensive yards. Rosengarten has excelled at creating openings for running back Derrick Henry, boasting a run block win rate of 83.3%, the second highest among right tackles. — Jamison Hensley

With nearly three-quarters of the roster being 25 years old or younger—38 of the 53 players fit this category—there are various young prospects to consider. One standout from this age group is Kraft. He secured his fourth touchdown pass of the season on Sunday, with all TD receptions occurring over the last four games. The 23-year-old is tied for the team’s top spot in touchdown receptions and ranks third in both receptions (21) and receiving yards (264). — Rob Demovsky

The rookie sixth-round pick has successfully made all 30 of his attempts this season, going 18-for-18 on extra points and 12-for-12 on field goals, marking the highest total of any NFL kicker this year without a single miss. Among these, he has completed four kicks from 53 yards or more. Coach Kevin O’Connell noted that he was ready to let Reichard, 23, attempt a 68-yard kick to secure a win for the Vikings in their Week 7 game, but a penalty ultimately moved the line back by five yards. — Kevin Seifert

The Steelers have a wealth of young talent on their roster, but it’s difficult to overlook the impressive contributions of rookie undrafted free agent, Bishop, especially after he secured two interceptions against Aaron Rodgers. Bishop rebounded remarkably after being targeted by Dak Prescott two weeks prior, coming close to returning his second interception for a touchdown. With no clear candidate for the slot corner position at the start of the season, the Steelers seemed poised to manage without Cameron Sutton for the first eight games. Washington selected rookie Sainrist
Il, who recently celebrated his 24th birthday, was drafted in the second round as a nickel corner and quickly became a starter. With a height of 5-foot-10 and a weight of 182 pounds, he plays with a presence that exceeds his physical size. Due to cornerback issues with Emmanuel Forbes Jr., the Commanders has shifted Sainristil to the outside position, even though they recognize his strengths are better utilized inside. Earlier this season, coach Dan Quinn referred to him as a “rare competitor” and a leader—not just for the rookies but also for the defensive backs.— John Keim

In two games, he has recorded 10 tackles, half a sack, and two quarterback pressures, helping to reinforce a unit that has allowed only nine points in that timeframe. Furthermore, he has assumed punt return duties for the injured Britain Covey, averaging 11 yards per return.— Tim McManus

Young riser: OLB Derick Hall
After a lackluster rookie season, Hall has emerged during his second year under Seattle’s new coaching staff. Despite finishing last season without any sacks, the second-rounder from 2023 now leads the team with 5.0 sacks, ranking ninth in the NFL. Additionally, he has three tackles for loss—equaling his total from last year—along with two forced fumbles and a 64-yard scoop-and-score touchdown last Sunday. The Seahawks’ defensive front has been plagued by injuries during the initial seven weeks, but the 24-year-old Hall has remained a reliable force.— Brady Henderson

Puni entered San Francisco and promptly established himself as the starting right guard. This position has been a struggle during coach Kyle Shanahan’s time since 2017; however, the 24-year-old Puni has displayed early potential as a solution. While there have been some challenges, his pass block win rate stands at 94.5% (ranking 11th among all guards), and his run block win rate is 73.1% (ranking 20th), suggesting further development is on the horizon. This second-year defensive tackle has significantly contributed to the Bears’ pass rush this season after taking on the 3-technique position full time. Dexter ranks third among all interior defensive linemen with 5.0 sacks, contributing to the Bears’ 8.4% sack percentage, which is the eighth-best in the NFL. At 24, Matlock also contributes on defense and special teams; his 236 snaps rank as the 11th most on the team. After missing his rookie season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Overshown has started to showcase the potential that led the Cowboys to select him in the third round in 2023. Initially used as a nickel package linebacker, he has evolved into a full-time linebacker, participating in all but 29 snaps over the last four games. Though the 24-year-old needs to improve his consistency, his speed allows him to pursue almost any player and compensate for minor errors. — Todd Archer

The Dolphins demonstrated their appreciation for Wright’s abilities by trading a future third-round pick to select him in the fourth round this April. Given the depth and skill present in the Dolphins’ backfield, it’s unlikely Wright will have a rookie season comparable to De’Von Achane’s in 2023.
