2023 NBA Rank: 85
At 6-foot-3, Simons may be a small guard who can be targeted defensively at times. Following the Damian Lillard trade, his usage rate was notably high, which likely contributed to him achieving his lowest effective field goal rate since the 2019-20 season. Nevertheless, even amidst increased defensive pressure, Simons concluded last season with a career-high shooting percentage of 65.8% from within three feet of the basket, according to Basketball-Reference. – Chris Herring
2023 NBA Rank: 76
Last season with the Warriors, Paul started in the fewest games (18) of his career, which understandably affected his performance. He recorded career lows in points (9.2), assists (6.8), steals (1.2), and field goal attempts (8.1). However, these numbers are likely to improve now that he is back to starting alongside Victor Wembanyama. Paul’s role in San Antonio goes beyond the court; he is expected to help the Spurs restore their championship culture while also playing a vital role in Wembanyama’s growth. With a capable starting point guard like Paul on the team, expect more offensive efficiency and improved execution during critical moments for the Spurs. — Michael Wright

As he enters his 18th NBA season, Conley continues to be remarkably reliable. A key indicator of his influence on the Timberwolves is their record: they achieved a 53-23 win-loss record with Conley as a starter and held a 3-3 record in the six games he missed before making a deep playoff run to the Western Conference finals. He remains an exceptional facilitator, averaging 5.9 assists per game, and has thrived playing off the ball alongside Anthony Edwards, shooting a career-best 44.2% from beyond the arc last season. — Tim MacMahon
2023 NBA Rank:

Perhaps Jones should be rated higher on this list, considering his recent performance where he earned a spot on the All-Defensive first team and placed fifth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. In his third year, he became a dependable 3-point shooter, boasting a percentage of 41.8%. It might be time to increase his attempts in this area. As a durable and tenacious defender, Jones could team up with Dejounte Murray in small-ball lineups, creating a formidable defensive duo that could pose significant challenges for opponents this season. Given that he has started at least 66 games each year in his career and continues to grow, Jones rightfully deserves a place in New Orleans’ starting lineup. — Wright

Horford’s return to this list in his age-38 season speaks volumes about his unwavering work ethic and the versatility he brings to the champions. The Celtics will likely continue to manage his minutes closely. However, with Kristaps Porzingis starting the season on the sidelines, Horford is set to once again be a vital contributor to the Celtics’ aspirations for a title, even at this later stage in his career. – Tim Bontemps

Last season, Murray, who began his second year as primarily a catch-and-shoot player, quickly demonstrated that he had developed additional offensive skills, including scoring off the dribble and driving to the basket. His growth was particularly evident in his defensive responsibilities; unlike his rookie year when he was often targeted on defense, he now takes on the opponent’s top offensive threats. With Harrison Barnes not returning this season, Murray will be tasked with more significant defensive duties and face tougher assignments. — Andrews

While Smith’s career may be progressing more slowly than anticipated, the emerging third-year player seems poised for a genuine breakout season following a 2023-24 campaign in which he tied his
career high of 16 double-doubles while enhancing his shooting and rebounding skills. According to Smith, veterans like Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks played a significant role last season, helping him understand preparation, body care, and film study. Last season, Valanciunas demonstrated exceptional durability by participating in all 82 games while averaging nearly a double-double and shooting 56% from the field. The 2023-24 season marked the eighth year in which the veteran appeared in 70 or more games. Washington boasts the NBA’s eighth-youngest roster, indicating that the Wizards will rely on Valanciunas’ leadership. Moreover, his expertise in the paint should be an advantage, as Washington ranked last in the league for second-chance points allowed per game and 29th for points allowed in the paint last season. — Wright

Only three seasons ago, Wiggins was an emerging All-Star. However, his performance dropped to just 37 games two seasons ago, and even with 71 games last season, his productivity suffered. Wiggins averaged 13.2 points per game, down four points from the previous two seasons. His explosive offense and tenacious defense, crucial for the Warriors’ 2022 championship run, were lacking. Although Wiggins is determined to return to his previous form, he did miss all of training camp in Hawaii due to an illness. Still, Warriors coach Steve Kerr remains optimistic that this setback won’t hinder Wiggins’ season start, as the Warriors need him to help reclaim a playoff spot. — Andrews

Jaquez had a remarkable rookie season, quickly earning the confidence of coach Erik Spoelstra. He appeared in the most games of any player on Miami’s roster and logged the second-most minutes, trailing only All-Star center Bam Adebayo. 85. Luguentz Dort, G, Oklahoma City Thunder
2023 NBA Rank: NR
Dort evolved from being an undrafted player on a two-way contract to embodying the 3-and-D archetype in his first five seasons in the NBA. His defensive prowess is underscored by the nickname “Dorture Chamber,” as he possesses incredibly quick feet, a linebacker-like build, and an unwavering determination to navigate through screens. He also developed into a reliable 3-point shooter, achieving a breakthrough last season with a shooting percentage of 39.4% on 5.0 attempts from beyond the arc per game. — MacMahon
84. CJ McCollum, G, New Orleans Pelicans
2023 NBA Rank: 44
Last season, McCollum posted a career-high shooting percentage of 42.9% from three-point range on a significant volume of 8.4 attempts per game as an off-ball scorer. However, the absence of Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram in the playoffs forced McCollum into a primary facilitator role, where he struggled, committing over twice the turnovers (4.0 per game) compared to the regular season (1.7) and shooting only 24.1% from beyond the arc. Due to the depth of players in the backcourt, there is a chance McCollum may transition to a bench role this season as a sixth man, which he has indicated he is amenable to. — Wright

As an outstanding rim protector, he also boasts the defensive range to contest 3-point shots effectively. However, his most remarkable attribute in recent seasons has been his prowess in offensive rebounding. He secured the second-highest offensive rebounding percentage for the 2021-22 season and led the league in this category for the 2022-23 season, a skill that complemented New York’s tough style of play in recent years. — Herring

As he enters a contract year, Turner aims to demonstrate his value in Indiana and prove to the league that he continues to perform at an elite level. — Collier
80. Jerami Grant, F, Portland Trail Blazers
2023 NBA Rank: 58
Grant achieved a 20-point-per-game average for the third time in four seasons. Additionally, he shot 40% from beyond the arc for the second time, providing a much-needed lift to the rebuilding Trail Blazers following the Lillard trade. However, despite his offensive talent, his rim protection showed a decline. Opponents shot 4.3 percentage points better around the basket with Grant defending last season, a stark contrast to the 3.9 percentage points worse they shot when he was on defense during the 2022-23 season. — Herring

Houston acquired VanVleet to help build the team’s culture, and there’s still work to be done with young talents like Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith, and Jalen Green. He is expected to assist in their development while taking on the role of floor general for a team eager to reach the playoffs. — Wright

Podziemski, together with his fellow draft classmate Trayce Jackson-Davis, embodies the Warriors’ pursuit of “winning now while investing in the future.” — Andrews
77. Jaden McDaniels, F, Minnesota Timberwolves
2023 NBA Rank: NR
At just 24 years old and four years into his career, McDaniels stands at 6-foot-9 and weighs 185 pounds. With a remarkable 7-foot wingspan, he has been positioned by the Minnesota management as the Scottie Pippen to Anthony Edwards’ Michael Jordan for years ahead. In today’s fluid NBA, McDaniels exemplifies a quintessential defender, capable of switching across all five positions, effectively suffocating rivals from the perimeter to the paint. The Wolves have placed substantial faith in him, trading away former franchise cornerstone Towns, just as McDaniels’ salary saw a steep rise from $3.9 million to $23 million. This indicates their expectations for a significant increase in his performance. — Dave McMenamin

He averaged 17.3 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks during this period, helping the Cavaliers achieve a league-best record of 18-2. He concluded the regular season with a double-double average in points and rebounds for the third time in his career. However, concerns persist regarding his fit on the court alongside Evan Mobley. After a challenging summer representing Team USA at the FIBA World Cup, Reaves needed some time to establish his rhythm last season after making a strong impression.
The scenario in the 2023 playoffs reflects a small drop in NBA Rank, which parallels his shooting efficiency from Year 2 (52.9% from the field and 39.8% from beyond the arc) to Year 3 (48.6%/36.7%). This is compounded by L.A.’s shortened playoff journey after being eliminated in the first round. However, this ranking does not take into account Reaves’ growth as a playmaker and his achievement of playing all 82 games. Following this season, a resurgence in his rank is highly likely. — McMenamin

Beal’s ranking saw a notable decline; despite posting impressive shooting splits of 51/43/81 in his initial season with the Suns, he missed 29 games, hindering Phoenix from establishing a clear team identity. Since the 2019-20 season began, Beal has been sidelined for 130 games due to injuries, surpassing Anthony Davis (120) and nearing Kawhi Leonard (161) but without damaging his reputation as severely as those players. This drop in ranking is directly linked to his recent inconsistency. Nonetheless, Charlotte’s choice to draft the Alabama wing with the second pick in the 2023 draft is increasingly looking wise with each game, and he rightfully found his place further up this list. — Bontemps

They concluded that it did, as Green continues to play a vital role as a leader for the Warriors this season, particularly in the wake of Klay Thompson’s departure in free agency. A silver lining for the Bucks: Middleton’s playoff performance—averaging 24.7 points and 9.2 rebounds on 48% shooting across six games—demonstrated that he still has the capability to reach an All-Star level. — Collier

Although questions persist regarding Garland’s compatibility with Donovan Mitchell, a more efficient performance is expected this year under new head coach Kenny Atkinson. “Just like Donovan, can we generate more easy catch-and-shoot [3s],” Atkinson mentioned on media day. “And statistically, he’s very effective when coming off ball screens.” — Marks
