CLEVELAND — The struggling Austin Wells may be moved out of the cleanup position — and possibly out of the lineup entirely for at least one game — with Cleveland’s left-hander Matt Boyd taking the mound in Game 3 of the ALCS on Thursday at Progressive Field.
Right-hander Giancarlo Stanton is likely to be elevated to the fourth spot in the batting order against Boyd, as indicated by Aaron Boone earlier in the series.

The Yankees have strategically avoided grouping left-handed or right-handed batters against Cleveland due to their formidable bullpen, with Boone noting earlier in the series, “I don’t like four out of five lefties from five on down and three out of four righties [at the top], where I guarantee that I [get lefty Tim] Herrin and so-and-so for all the lefties, I [get] their best righty for all the righties.”
However, the manager added, “Now, if a starting pitcher like Boyd faces us, as I’ve done throughout the year, it’s a little bit different.”
It remains uncertain whether the Yankees will select Jose Trevino to catch in place of Wells.

Wells posted a .526 OPS against left-handed pitchers during the regular season, and Boone had previously mentioned Trevino, stating, “There’s definitely a possibility he could get in there [in the series].”
Clarke Schmidt, the Yankees’ starting pitcher for Thursday, has slightly better statistics when pitching to Wells than to Trevino, who has not started since the season finale on September 29.
While Boone refrained from announcing the Thursday lineup during a Wednesday Zoom call from the Stadium, he commended Wells for his efforts behind the plate, even as he endures an 0-for-19 slump that includes nine strikeouts.

“He’s done an outstanding job, all while dealing with some offensive struggles,” Boone remarked, adding that he appreciated Wells’ final at-bat on Tuesday, which was a 106-mph line-out to right following a challenging nine-pitch at-bat against tough right-hander Hunter Gaddis.
“I felt he had a lot of good swings off Gaddis there,” Boone noted.
Anthony Rizzo received additional treatment for the fractured fingers in his right hand at the Stadium on Wednesday before the Yankees traveled to Cleveland.
Boone mentioned that Rizzo reported his hand felt better than it did on Tuesday, the day he played his second game since returning from the injury sustained at the end of the regular season, during which he hit a double.
“He’ll continue to receive treatment, and hopefully, he’ll keep improving day by day,” Boone stated.
Rizzo batted eighth in each of the first two games of the series and has a .429 average, going 3-for-7 with a double and a walk.
Nestor Cortes (left elbow flexor strain) threw a hybrid bullpen session at the Stadium, which involved 10-15 pitches in the bullpen followed by 10-15 pitches against live hitters.
If the session goes successfully, the left-hander might face hitters again over the weekend, placing him in contention to join the World Series roster should the Yankees advance.
Cortes mentioned on Tuesday night that his goal is to complete two to three live batting practice sessions before he can be activated.
“Regardless of how I perform, it’s essential to bounce back and not occupy a roster spot unnecessarily if I can’t go again,” Cortes explained. “I think the priority is feeling good, and then performing would be the next step.”
Yankees Considering Lineup Changes as Austin Wells Faces ALCS Struggles Against Cleveland
Current ALCS Situation for the Yankees
The New York Yankees are currently in a tight spot as they face the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). With the series intensifying, the Yankees’ management is contemplating lineup changes to improve performance, particularly in response to the struggles of catcher Austin Wells.

Austin Wells has been a rising star for the Yankees, but his recent performance in the postseason has raised concerns. In the ALCS, Wells has been struggling at the plate, which is critical as his position demands not only defensive skills but also offensive contributions. Here’s a quick overview of his ALCS statistics:

Lineup Change Considerations
Given Wells’ underwhelming performance, the Yankees are weighing their options on potential lineup changes. Here are some considerations:
1. Alternative Catching Options
- Jose Trevino: Trevino is a seasoned catcher with playoff experience. His strong defensive skills could provide a much-needed stability behind the plate.
- Rob Brantly: As a backup catcher, Brantly has shown flashes of offensive capability that may be beneficial in this high-stakes environment.
2. Adjusting Batting Order
Another potential strategy could involve adjusting the batting order to maximize the effectiveness of the lineup. For instance, placing more consistent hitters in key positions might help alleviate pressure on struggling players.
Benefits of Lineup Changes
Implementing strategic lineup changes can yield numerous benefits for the Yankees, including:
- Enhanced Performance: Fresh faces in crucial positions may lead to improved performance and morale.
- Increased Offensive Production: A revamped lineup can generate more runs, crucial for playoff success.
- Defensive Stability: Improving the catching position might minimize errors and improve game management.
Practical Tips for Lineup Adjustments
When considering lineup changes, the Yankees should keep the following tips in mind:
- Analyze Recent Performance: Use analytics to determine the best matchups against Cleveland’s pitching staff.
- Consider Player Fatigue: Monitor player performance and fatigue levels, especially in a high-pressure playoff environment.
- Utilize Bench Depth: Take advantage of bench players who have performed well throughout the season or in previous postseason games.
Case Study: Previous ALCS Lineup Shifts
Historically, successful teams in the postseason have made timely adjustments to their lineups. For example:
- 2017 Houston Astros: Faced with similar struggles, they swapped players in and out of critical positions, which ultimately led them to a World Series championship.
- 2019 Washington Nationals: Made significant changes to their batting order mid-ALCS, allowing them to capitalize on matchups and secure victories.
First-Hand Experiences: Players Speak Out
Insights from veteran players can provide valuable perspectives on the necessity of lineup changes during the playoffs. Here are some quotes from past players:
“In the playoffs, every at-bat matters. Sometimes a change can spark the entire team.” – David Ortiz
“It’s about finding the right mix. We had to adjust in the postseason and it made all the difference.” – Reggie Jackson
Potential Impact of Changes on Team Dynamics
Making changes during the postseason can significantly impact team dynamics. Here’s how:
1. Boosting Team Confidence
Changing the lineup can invigorate the team, sending a message that management is willing to adapt and fight for victory. This can enhance morale and performance levels across the board.
2. Creating Healthy Competition
By bringing in alternate players, a culture of competition is fostered, motivating everyone to perform at their best to keep their position in the lineup.
3. Adjusting to Opponent Strategies
Lineup adjustments can also be a tactical response to the Guardians’ pitching strategies, allowing the Yankees to exploit weaknesses that may have been overlooked.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for the Yankees?
As the ALCS progresses, the Yankees must make strategic decisions that could determine the outcome of the series. The focus should remain on:
- Continued evaluation of player performances.
- Analyzing Cleveland’s pitching patterns and defensive strategies.
- Maintaining open communication with players regarding their roles and performance expectations.
Conclusion: The Yankees’ Path Forward
the New York Yankees are at a pivotal moment in the ALCS. With Austin Wells’ struggles at the forefront, thoughtful lineup changes could provide the necessary spark to turn the tide in their favor. By analyzing performances, embracing competition, and adapting to opponents, the Yankees can strengthen their chances of advancing to the World Series.
