This week’s USMNT Player Tracker highlights significant injury updates, an enthusiastic Christian Pulisic, and Josh Sargent’s sharp instincts on the field.
Throughout the season, The Athletic will provide updates on American players competing in various European leagues.
With just 20 months remaining until the World Cup on home soil and new national-team head coach Mauricio Pochettino evaluating his options, we’re monitoring the players’ performances each weekend.
Weekend Issue
Despite a challenging start to his tenure with a victory against Panama but a disappointing loss to Mexico, Pochettino can at least anticipate the return of key players for the November matches.
The new coach hasn’t yet had the opportunity to work with crucial duo Tyler Adams and Tim Weah, both of whom missed this month’s friendlies due to injuries.
Tim Weah, a forward, experienced an ankle sprain that hindered his start to the Italian season with Juventus. However, he made his return for the first time in a month on Saturday, coming on in the 54th minute during their 1-0 home victory against Lazio. Additionally, a hamstring issue caused him to miss two more matches in August and September. Both his club and country now hope the 24-year-old can maintain his fitness and regain peak performance.

In other news, Tyler Adams reached a milestone as his club Bournemouth surprised many with a 2-0 home win against Premier League title contenders Arsenal.
The 25-year-old midfielder is nearing the end of his lengthy recovery following back surgery over the summer and was included in the matchday squad for the first time this season on Saturday. Although he missed the international matches against Panama and Mexico last week, Adams participated in a closed-door game for Bournemouth.
Bournemouth faced Premier League rivals Southampton and has since returned to full training.
“He hasn’t had much playing time,” head coach Andoni Iraola remarked about Adams during the pre-Arsenal press conference. “It’s normal for him to be lacking in game experience. However, he is feeling good, has shown positive signs, and trained exceptionally well during this break with us. He’s prepared to play.”

Although Adams was not required against a 10-man Arsenal, his return to fitness is beneficial for everyone involved.
In La Liga, Pochettino saw signs of improved midfield options with Johnny Cardoso participating for Real Betis after missing this month’s camp due to precautionary knee issues. Cardoso helped his team secure a 2-1 victory over Osasuna on Saturday.
The 23-year-old midfielder is expected to be ready for the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals against Jamaica next month.
Player of the weekend
Pulisic keeps impressing — another week brings yet another goal contribution for AC Milan.
The USMNT star may have frustrated some analysts, including former teammate Tim Howard, with his choice to leave the international camp prior to the second match against Mexico. This decision was intended to manage his energy levels. His absence was felt during a lackluster performance in Guadalajara, but his focus on maintaining stamina is likely appreciated by Milan fans.
On Saturday, Milan earned their fourth win in the last five Serie A matches, thanks to a Samuel Chukwueze goal set up by the American, beating Udinese 1-0.
As a result, Pulisic has contributed to a goal in seven consecutive club games, making him the first player in any of Europe’s top five leagues to achieve this feat this season. To add to his growing popularity, he even conducted his post-match interview in Italian.

Quote of the weekend
Pulisic’s energy levels were undeniably on display over the weekend. He completed the full match, earning commendations from manager Paulo Fonseca, and moved around the pitch so adeptly that the DAZN post-match interviewer inquired if he could possibly take a turn as goalkeeper.
“I should probably ask (goalkeeper Mike) Maignan!” responded Pulisic. “It’s true that I’ve played in various positions, but I’m just glad we achieved the win.”
Graphic of the weekend
We all know Pulisic is talented—it’s clear by now. In all honesty, his recent performances being the lone consistent highlight in this Tracker may be heightening your worries. But what if I told you he isn’t the American player creating the most chances across Europe’s top five leagues this season?
Allow me to present Jeremy Kelly, a 27-year-old left-wing specialist hailing from Prague.

Kelly’s journey is increasingly becoming a viable route for U.S.-eligible players. After
Selected ninth overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, Kelly made only eight appearances for the Colorado Rapids before being released after the 2021 season. Following a couple of solid years with USL Championship side Memphis 901, he established himself as a regular starter and took a risk by signing with Crawley Town in January 2024, joining their ongoing promotion campaign.
He played in all three playoff matches as the Red Devils ascended from League Two, and continues to be a key player in Rob Elliot’s lineup in League One.
Over the weekend, Kelly created another four chances during a tough loss against Reading, bringing his total to 30 for the season (Pulisic has 23). Unfortunately, Crawley has faltered after a strong start, securing only one point from their last ten matches following three initial victories.
Is Kelly a candidate for Pochettino’s longlist for the USMNT? Probably not. However, it’s important to consider the progress of the American player pool over the last 10 to 15 years. During Bob Bradley’s tenure, it wouldn’t have been surprising for some fans to consider a third-division left wing-back as a desired option. Instead, what’s more encouraging now is that previously overlooked players are successfully pursuing steady careers higher up in England’s football hierarchy.

This season in the second-tier Championship, Sargent has accumulated four assists to match his goal tally. However, his latest contribution to a teammate will not be remembered as his most elegant one.
The 24-year-old found himself in the right spot when a shot from Oscar Schwartau deflected off a Stoke City defender, struck him in the face, and landed perfectly for Ante Crnac, who scored to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Whether intentional or not, it aided Norwich, now seventh in the table, in securing an away point.
