Why MLB pitchers grunt when throwing a pitch
While the data does not unanimously indicate that grunting increases pitch velocity, many experienced pitchers agree that this vocal expression helps amplify intensity and allows them to exert maximum effort on the mound. This unfiltered, almost primal action is something that has been welcomed by pitching coaches, including Pete Walker of the Blue Jays.
“I believe it’s more than just a habit,” Walker stated. “They’ve discovered and utilized something that aids them, potentially even in recovery from pitch to pitch. Keeping things inside and internalizing emotions isn’t always beneficial, and grunting serves as a release. I think it genuinely helps to loosen them up physically.”
In this regard, grunting is significant as it acts as a means to expel accumulated energy. Yet, it also provides an element of humor for teammates.
“During the first bullpen session I caught for [Ray], I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself because it happened with literally every pitch,” said Giants catcher Tom Murphy. “By the last ball I tossed back to him, I ended up grunting as well. I gave him a little acknowledgment, like, ‘Hey, I feel you.’”

When Ray pitches 98 times in a game, you can expect 98 accompanying grunts. Conversely, Scherzer prefers to reserve his vocalizations for critical moments. Hill grunts to bolster his conviction, recognizing that authenticity is essential.
There are no strict guidelines regarding grunting in baseball, except for one.
Wouldn’t be a Robbie Ray pitching performance without some grunting.

During the Nationals’ championship run in 2019, Scherzer made a notably controversial remark: If a pitcher grunts, he must throw 95 mph.
“That’s actually my Shawn Kelley rule,” Scherzer explained. “[Former MLB reliever] Shawn Kelley grunted but only threw 93, and I teased him about it, saying, ‘That’s not acceptable. It’s only cool if you’re reaching 95 mph.’ That’s proof that you’re genuinely throwing hard.”
Fast forward five years?
“Absolutely, I still stand by that,” Scherzer affirmed.

Charm manifests in various ways, particularly through the sounds that fill the atmosphere on game day. The crack of a bat, an organ player’s interpretation of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and the synchronized roars from the audience all contribute to the experience.
And at times, there is the loud grunt from the pitcher on the mound.

The allure of baseball manifests in various ways, notably through the distinctive sounds that create a game-day atmosphere. This includes the sharp crack of the bat, an organist’s performance of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and the synchronized cheers from the crowd.
Occasionally, it also features the robust grunt from the pitcher on the mound.
Though commonly linked to tennis, grunting has traditionally been a part of baseball as well. From the iconic Nolan Ryan to the strikingly brown- and blue-eyed Max Scherzer, many pitchers have employed grunting as a means of achieving success.
Various studies indicate that tennis players who grunt experience increased swing velocity, particularly when serving. Although there is less research in the realm of baseball, a 2021 study by Hardin Simmons University found that “mean ball velocities with a maximal grunt averaged 2.73 mph faster than without a grunt. The results were statistically significant, showing an average increase of 3.4% in throwing velocities while grunting.”
An internal mechanism for boosting velocity was likely the last thing that hitters confronting the fireballing Ryan desired.
While Monica Seles, Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe are credited with introducing the grunt to tennis, Ryan was instrumental in establishing the grunt phenomenon in baseball throughout his extensive 27-year career. Similar to how tennis players utilize grunting during specific moments in their game (generally on serves), Ryan—who pitched a fastball, curveball, and changeup—only vocalized on his most powerful pitches.
“I don’t know if they do it intentionally, but I certainly didn’t,” stated Ryan, who began his career with the Mets in 1966. “I believe it just evolved. It wasn’t something I did on purpose. I think the fact that I was what I refer to as a ‘maximum-effort guy’ on my fastball meant that [grunting] was merely a natural response.”
Ryan characterized his now-iconic grunt as a “natural reaction” stemming from the physical exertion involved in delivering his fastball. This response has been a part of Ryan’s career for as long as he can recall. Similar to Ryan, other pitchers also experience grunting as a subconscious action, although it hasn’t always been integral to their style of play.
Jordan Romano, a reliever for the Blue Jays, began noticing his own grunt during the 2022-23 seasons, marking his fourth year in Major League Baseball. Having previously played alongside the well-known grunter Robbie Ray, Romano believes Ray’s influence played a significant role in his adopting the grunt.
“Perhaps hearing him allowed me to express it freely myself,” Romano stated. “I can’t pinpoint when it began, but it gradually developed, and now it’s a part of my routine. I enjoy it.”
As a pitcher with a dual-pitch repertoire who describes himself as “max effort, all the time,” Romano indicated that suppressing his grunt would likely impede his performance.
“I’m putting everything I have into it, so the grunt feels instinctive,” Romano explained. “Some pitchers maintain a calmer demeanor on the mound, but that’s not my style. The grunt seems to suit me.”
Other pitchers, however, view grunting as a deliberate strategy. Max Scherzer, a 17-year MLB veteran currently with the Rangers, admits to grunting for as long as he can remember. Aware of the “Mad Max” nickname he’s earned, Scherzer understands that it doesn’t arise from a calm demeanor on the mound. Yet, his approach is very intentional.
“I say, ‘you pitch with emotions, but you shouldn’t be overly emotional,’” Scherzer commented. “I sometimes display my emotions openly and leverage them to my advantage. I consider myself a high-adrenaline pitcher: I thrive in high-stakes situations where giving everything it takes to get a batter out is crucial.”
“When you’re fully engaged, you can throw the ball with maximum effort while maintaining your aim. That’s when you realize you’re in sync—when you can unleash the ball as hard as possible and still find your target.”
The
The ability to find a specific spot may explain why more seasoned players embrace grunting compared to newcomers in the league. With experience, pithers can better determine how much effort is necessary to place their pitch accurately. Scherzer articulated that developing the knack for grunting is a journey toward building confidence. By mastering command, one can rely on that self-trust to pitch with greater intensity.
Beyond their grunting habits, Ryan, Ray, Romano, and Scherzer share another trait: they all pitch with impressive velocity.
Now, let’s consider the grunting exception.
In contrast to Romano’s fastballs clocked at 96-97 mph or Scherzer’s mid-90s offerings, Rich Hill has achieved success as a pitcher with lower velocity. He primarily utilizes a curveball and a four-seamer, with his highest career average velocity recorded at 88.5 mph in 2022.
“It certainly gives you a bit more conviction behind the pitch,” Hill remarked. “Over time, it’s not about being louder with your grunt to improve the pitch. It’s more about knowing my effort level is sufficient. You can tell when the grunt is genuine and when it’s not.”
Although he is recognized for his vocalizations now, Hill didn’t begin grunting until around a decade into his time in Major League Baseball. During his stint across six organizations, he appeared in 201 games (74 starts) from 2005 to 2015.
Aiming to reclaim a starting position, Hill caught the attention of the Red Sox (for the second time) in 2015. He signed a Minor League contract and received a September callup. Hill made four starts for Boston, amassing a 1.55 ERA before signing a one-year deal with the Athletics during the offseason.
In 2016, while pitching for Oakland and the Dodgers and now equipped with a grunt, Hill posted a 2.12 ERA over his most starts (20) since his 2007 season with the Cubs (32 starts). Although Hill does not merely credit his career revival to the addition of a grunt, this vocalization signifies a significant evolution and maturation that allowed him to embrace his identity as a pitcher.
“There was a shift in my personality as well when I was on the mound,” Hill noted. “I grew more comfortable with my identity as a pitcher, and I believe that reflected in my demeanor while competing.”
Growing up a fan of tennis, Hill was captivated by players like Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras, especially during Grand Slam tournaments. However, Hill’s path to incorporating grunting into his game was not a straightforward one; it felt more like a stumbling journey rather than a surge of inspiration from his tennis idols or a motivating vocal teammate.
“I just sort of thought, ‘Forget it,’” Hill remarked. “Whatever it takes for me to make the ball come from my hand as I desire with the intensity I want at the end of my pitch. If that involves grunting, then so be it.”
Now at 44, Hill signed a Minor League deal with the Red Sox in mid-August, and on Tuesday, he was added to the Major League roster. This marks his fourth stint with the Boston team. Nearly a decade after first trying out the grunt and embracing his unique style on the mound, Hill returns to the organization boasting a 3.72 ERA across 181 games (174 of which were starts) since 2016.
“The 2015 season was another chance for me,” Hill explained. “I decided to hit the gas and not let off until the ball was out of my hand. Whatever that looked like—whether it was beautiful or not—that’s what you’d see. There would be no apologies for it either. I believe reaching a point in your career where you can be unapologetic about your performance is immensely liberating.”
While data does not wholly indicate that grunting increases velocity, many veteran pitchers agree that it can amplify intensity, allowing them to lay everything on the field. This unabashed, almost primal expression is something that pitching coaches, like the Blue Jays’ Pete Walker, have welcomed.
“It’s not just a quirk,” Walker stated. “They’ve come to understand and harness something that assists them, perhaps even in recovery between pitches. Keeping feelings bottled up isn’t always beneficial, and this is a method of releasing them. It allows them to physically free up.”
In this regard, grunting serves a serious purpose; it acts as an outlet for releasing pent-up energy. Yet, teammates can’t help but chuckle at the comical sound it produces.
“During the first bullpen session I caught against [Ray], I found myself laughing because he grunted with literally every pitch,” said Giants catcher Tom Murphy. “I think the last ball I threw back to him, I let out a grunt myself.”
I offered him a subtle, ‘Hey, I’m here for you.’
When Ray pitches 98 times in a game, it’s highly likely that 98 grunts will accompany his efforts. In contrast, Scherzer reserves his sounds for more significant moments. Hill grunts to bolster his confidence, fully aware that authenticity is key.
No rigid guidelines govern the practice of grunting in baseball—except one.
During the Nationals’ title run in 2019, Scherzer made a statement that sparked some debate: If you grunt, you must throw 95 [mph].
“That’s actually my Shawn Kelley rule,” Scherzer noted. “[Former MLB reliever] Shawn Kelley grunted while throwing 93, and I teased him about it, saying, ‘That’s not acceptable. Grunting is only impressive when you reach 95.’ That indicates that you’re genuinely throwing hard.”
“Yes, I still stand by that,” Scherzer affirmed.

Unlocking the Mystery: Why MLB Pitchers Embrace Grunting on the Mound
The Phenomenon of Grunting in Baseball
Grunting is a vocalization often associated with physical exertion, and in Major League Baseball (MLB), it’s particularly prevalent among pitchers. This unique aspect of pitching has sparked widespread curiosity, leading fans and analysts to explore its purpose and effectiveness. Let’s delve into why grunting has become a staple for many MLB pitchers and how it impacts their performance on the mound.
Understanding the Mechanics of Grunting
Grunting during a pitch is not merely a theatrical display; it involves a specific technique that can affect a pitcher’s biomechanics. When a pitcher exhales forcefully while releasing the ball, it can create several physiological advantages:
- Core Stabilization: Grunting engages core muscles, providing better stability and control during the pitch.
- Breath Control: Coordinating breath with the pitching motion improves oxygen flow and reduces muscle fatigue.
- Force Generation: The act of grunting can enhance explosive movement, contributing to faster pitch speeds.
