Tyler Toffoli and Barclay Goodrow have been appointed as the new alternate captains for the San Jose Sharks.
One notable insight from #SJSharks media day is that both Barclay Goodrow and Tyler Toffoli have been given the ‘A’ on their sweaters, even before an official practice has taken place. This clearly indicates that the organization sees them as high-character leaders to enhance the team dynamic.

During this offseason, Toffoli signed the most lucrative contract awarded by the Sharks to an outside free agent, a four-year deal worth million. While he never wore an ‘A’ during his eight-year tenure with the Los Angeles Kings, he donned one with the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021-22 season prior to his trade. Furthermore, he served as captain for Team Canada at the 2023 World Championships.
Previously, Barclay Goodrow held the position of alternate captain for three years with the New York Rangers before being put on waivers. Before his time with the Rangers, he was an alternate captain for two seasons and served as captain for one season with the OHL’s North Bay Battalion.
According to the San Jose Sharks’ Instagram account, Mario Ferraro is also retaining his “A”.
It remains uncertain whether Luke Kunin or Mikael Granlund will retain their positions as alternate captains after being assigned the letters late last season.
Congratulations to Tyler and Barclay!
