CHICAGO — In the opening game of a four-game series, the Detroit Tigers faced a significant challenge against the Chicago White Sox, who hold the position of the worst team in baseball — perhaps even in its history.

With a two-run seventh inning, the Tigers claimed a 5-2 victory over the White Sox on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field. Matt Vierling produced the go-ahead run with a ground-ball single off right-handed reliever Justin Anderson that rolled into right field.
“My objective with runners on first and third, with less than two outs in a tied game in the seventh, is to get the guy home,” Vierling remarked. “I’m focused on putting the ball in play, ideally with a sacrifice fly or something similar.”
Currently, the White Sox are on track for a staggering 122 losses, standing at 31-98. This would set a new modern MLB record for losses, surpassing the 120-loss mark established by the 1962 New York Mets. The American League record stands at 119, a record set by the 2003 Tigers.
“Maintaining the same approach is crucial,” Vierling noted. “If you change your mindset, that’s when things can go wrong, or you might stray from your game. We’re just trying to play the consistent baseball we’ve been playing for a while, remaining aggressive and assembling quality at-bats.”

The Tigers (63-66) scored a run in both the first and second innings but faced shutdown from right-hander Chris Flexen for the remainder of his six-inning outing. However, an opportunity arose when Flexen departed, and the Tigers swiftly capitalized on it.
A walk from Parker Meadows and a single by Riley Greene set the stage for Vierling, but first, the White Sox opted for righty Anderson to replace left-handed reliever Fraser Ellard.
The pitching change was inconsequential for Vierling, who crushed the second pitch from Anderson — a middle-

Prior to McKinstry’s hit, the Tigers had sent Jake Rogers to the plate to pinch-hit for Kerry Carpenter against a left-handed reliever, which prompted the White Sox to substitute in a right-handed pitcher. This strategic move allowed the Tigers to then bring in the left-handed McKinstry.
“There will be a time when I won’t hit for (Carpenter),” Hinch explained, ”but with the matchups we had, bringing in a right-handed pitcher to face McKinstry and Colt seemed advantageous. It puts the opposing team in a difficult position: which matchup do you prefer? We have competent players, and they’re prepared. All season, we’ve emphasized being ready because situations can change instantly. You must be prepared at a moment’s notice.”
The Tigers maintained their lead thanks to scoreless innings pitched by right-handed reliever Shelby Miller in the eighth and Jason Foley in the ninth. Miller has now delivered seven consecutive scoreless innings over his last seven relief appearances, with no walks and nine strikeouts.
“Being ahead in counts aids him,” Hinch commented about Miller, who holds a 4.91 ERA across 47 innings. “When he has all three pitches working effectively in the strike zone, he becomes very difficult to hit.”

“I was missing the strike zone with some hitters,” Montero said in Spanish, as interpreted by Carlos Guillén, the Tigers’ manager of Spanish communication and broadcasting. “It was my responsibility for not finishing them off with two strikes, which allowed them to take advantage of some opportunities. It’s part of the game. I have been working on this progressively and hope to improve soon.”
The White Sox opened the scoring with Lenyn Sosa’s RBI single in the second inning, followed by Korey Lee’s RBI double in the fourth, making it 2-2 before the Tigers finally broke through in the seventh.

In the first inning, back-to-back doubles from Greene and Vierling propelled the Tigers to a 1-0 lead. Greene’s double soared to right field at an exit velocity of 104.6 mph, while Vierling blasted his double to left at 107.1 mph.
