After an outstanding season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and earning a spot on the All-EuroLeague First Team last year, Nigel Hayes-Davis chose to remain with Fenerbahçe Beko this summer.
In an interview with Eurohoops, Nigel covered a range of subjects, such as his decision to stay, his experience with the US national team, the roots of his confidence, game manipulation, and his personal aspirations for the upcoming season.
“The answer is straightforward – I didn’t sign an NBA contract. Some things in life are simple, and that’s the straightforward truth. I have always indicated that I wanted to be close to my family and friends in the NBA. I aim to be the best version of myself wherever I go, and this season, I will strive to be the best Nigel I can be,” Hayes-Davis explained regarding his choice to remain in Istanbul.
After a strong season and a summer spent with Team USA, he gained interest from the NBA. Nonetheless…
“Ultimately, it didn’t pan out. The reasons are not crucial. I’ve always been someone who focuses on what I can control. I believe I did everything possible to showcase my capabilities. Sometimes, things don’t align as you wish. Perhaps this is better for me. I experienced a similar situation last summer, came back, and broke a EuroLeague scoring record. We don’t know what the universe holds for me this year, but we will find out together.”
He participated in the Team USA setup during the Olympic preparations, collaborating with some of the biggest stars in the NBA.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Those three weeks were the best of my life; I can hardly recall being happier. Everything from dawn to dusk was incredible. I am very thankful for the experience. The camp, everything I absorbed, the atmosphere, and traveling with the team were simply perfect. There are people who would pay a great deal for such experiences. It’s a memory I will cherish forever. I’m glad I documented most of it. Being able to relive and share it later will be very special for me.”
As he prepares for another season with Fenerbahçe, the player who scored the most points in a EuroLeague game—50 against ALBA Berlin last season—aims to enhance his skills.
“I do not want to be a player who dominates the ball. I aim to elevate my conditioning to a very high standard. I want to set better screens and average around 6-7 rebounds per game. I intend to concentrate on aspects that demand energy and endurance. I’m confident I will continue to develop my game. I’ve never been the type to monopolize the ball. There are skilled point guards in the league who need the ball to score and assist their teams. I don’t need to dominate to be effective, and that’s not my aim. I’ve previously discussed the ‘gatherer-hunter’ mentality with my coach Charlie. I aim to take what the defense provides in each play, whether that means taking the right shot or finding the right teammate for the best shot. Charlie once shared a video of Michael Jordan scoring 45 points in a playoff game, where he only dribbled more than three times on one play. When he received the ball, he shot quickly.”
Looking ahead to the new season, Hayes-Davis aspires for another Final Four appearance.
“My view is clear: I want to be in the Final Four. The best way to achieve that is to work as hard as possible. The summer and preparation period are crucial for that. I must do everything necessary to perform at my best when the season gets underway. The key is to remain healthy by the season’s end and for every team member to find their rhythm. By the time playoffs arrive, every team is familiar with each other’s capabilities and strengths. Surprises are rare at that stage. This is why health becomes so critical. Every team shares the same goal, and we will find out in 8-9 months who accomplishes that goal,” concluded Nigel Hayes-Davis.
